The In-Law Whammy
AIRED:
It's a comedy of errors when Mike sets out to make an impression on his future father-in-law when Sally's father returns from an archeological expedition. Mike is unnerved about meeting him but practically kills him with a little too much kindness and enthusiasm.

  • My Three Sons meets Meet the Parents.

This episode was one that was featured in a weekend marathon on TV Land of B&W MTS episodes in October 2000. As far as I can remember, TV Land stopped airing MTS then, so I'm writing from memory. Any way, I notice a resemblance between this episode and the 2000 movie comedy Meet The Parents, with Ben Stiller in a role similar to Tim Considine's, and Robert De Niro as more or less that of Sebastian Cabot, although Mr. Morrison wasn't quite the eccentric that De Niro's character was.

There was lots of slapstick in this one, with Mike trying so hard to make a good impression on his future father-in-law, a well-known explorer and adventurer, that he nearly kills him. From the moment Mr. Morrison stepped into the Douglas home, his life was hilariously in danger so long as poor Mike was around, beginning, I think, with the time when Mike tried to help him with his coat, and nearly strangles him. One of the funnier episodes.moreless

    • In the opening frame of the first Color production (Episode #185) there is a shot of Mike and Sally's Wedding invitation. At the top it reads, "Mr. & Mrs. Charles Frazier Morrison request the pleasure of..." etc. Strange then that this episode acknowledges that Sally's Dad's name was Tom!

    • Portly Guest Star Sebastian Cabot (1918-77) would very soon appear in the 1965 Pilot episode of "Family Affair" which was produced by Don Fedderson Productions and began as a series the following year and ran a respectable five seasons, 1966-71.
It is interesting to note that during that period of time, the production personnel and guest stars of both programs from the Fedderson stable were lent between both series.
