My Three Sons

Season 8 Episode 30

The Tire Thief

Aired Unknown Mar 30, 1968 on ABC

  • Trivia

    • This is the last season to turn out 30 or more episodes. Next season's order decreases by two episodes, and the number gradually declines, until the final season, when only 24 episodes are produced. The beginning seasons had more than 30 episodes each.

  • Quotes

  • Notes

    • With this episode, Tina Cole finishes her first season as the show's new lead female character. The final scene has Ernie tell Chip that they finally have a 'mother.' Of course, there will be a stepmother at the beginning of season 10 when Beverly Garland joins the cast.

    • From the next 1968-69 season, Actor Don Grady (as Robbie) once again changes his hairstyle so that the part in his hairline is now on the left side like his co-stars. It's a style he continues to wear to this very day.

    • Black actor Joel Fluellen who plays the desk sergeant at the police station committed suicide at age 82, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

    • This is the last appearance of Kevin Tate as Gordon Dearing. From next season he will be played by a different actor. Child actor Sheldon Golomb appears under his stage name Sheldon Collins. He is perhaps best remembered as a friend of Ron Howard's character Opie Taylor on "The Andy Griffith Show" (1962-68).

  • Allusions

    • Notice the scenes with Ernie, Shorty and Gordon waging warfare in the neighborhood with sophisticated looking water guns. This is an allusion to the fact that the Vietnam conflict was occurring at the time these episodes were made and American boys were encouraged to think like warriors.

    • This title is an allusion to the famous European film 'The Bicycle Thief' by Italian director Vittorio DeSica.
