The Divine Comedy, often referred to as Dante's Inferno is a poem written by Italian poet Dante Alighieri between 1308 and his death in 1321, and is considered one of the greatest works of world literature. In it, the central character, Dante, passes through the gate of hell, on which is inscribed the phrase "Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate", or "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here".
