  • Can the eccentric Mr. Karswell really summon demons from Hell with the aid of Runic symbols? And, if so, can poor Mr. Dunning survive his wrath?

    9.5
Not as well remembered as the 1957 film version of the same story ("Night Of The Demon"), but still pretty near to it in quality, and with the added attraction that it sticks very closely to M.R. James's famous yarn and retains the period setting (the early 1900s) - the film was rather a free adaptation which brought the story into the modern day. There is less emphasis on the diabolical Mr. Karswell this time round, and more on his plucky victim and his friends, who devise a satisfactory comeuppance for the vile demonologist - one which, as with James's story, retains a certain amount of ambiguity by not actually showing us anything definitely supernatural.moreless

    • There was a second ITV adaptation of this story for "ITV Playhouse" in 1979. Like "Night Of The Demon", the famous 1957 movie version of this story, it moved the plot into the present day; it also changed the heroic character "Edward Dunning" into a woman. Jan Francis played her and Iain Cuthbertson played the demonologist Karswell. The play was televised on April 24th, 1979.
