  • A somewhat condensed but splendid version of the famous story, originally shown as a TV play in its own right and not as part of the "Mystery And Imagination" series.

    9.5
This adaptation owed as much to various earlier versions as to Bram Stoker. Like the Bela Lugosi movie, this conflates the characters of Renfield and Jonathan Harker into a single character (played by Corin Redgrave as if he'd never heard of under-acting); like the 1920s play, it is set wholly in England; and the final disintegration of Dracula, which leaves nothing of him except his ring in a pile of dust on the stone floor of his lair, is very similar to the climax of the first Christopher Lee film in 1958. We may also note that Professor Van Helsing bears an intriguing resemblance to Sigmund Freud; whilst the ending, with Susan George smiling enigmatically to herself as she clutches the aforementioned ring, is highly ambiguous.moreless

    • Denholm Elliott was voted "the sexiest man on British television" at the end of 1968 by the readers of a British tabloid daily newspaper. As his appearance as Dracula was almost his only British television appearance that year, it seems reasonable to assume his success was on the strength of this one performance.
