  • How can a British ghost compete against the onslaught of American know-how?

Perhaps because it was the last episode of the first series, this was a quite untypical "Mystery And Imagination" entry, aiming for charm and comedy rather than shocks and shivers. But Oscar Wilde's story - where the ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville finds that an up-to-date family of American visitors simply won't be frightened by his old-fashioned scare tactics - is really just a bit too quaint to sustain a full hour (which hasn't stopped it being adapted for TV again in more recent times) and Bruce Forsyth, making his straight-acting debut in the title role, isn't the right man for the part. The tone is more melancholy than anything else.moreless
