  • A version of the famous story which, like the 1960 film version, makes the narrator a character in the tale, and a lover for the ill-fated Madeleine Usher.

The Vincent Price - Roger Corman movie of a half-decade earlier (which kicked off an octet of Poe cinema adaptations) is as much the inspiration for this teledrama as the original tale. Denholm Elliott is quite a reasonable substitute for Price, and seems quite as little bothered by considerations of understatement. Susannah York is less happily cast as Madeleine (the role has been built up somewhat to accomodate her star presence) and one might feel that a shade more brevity would have made the story that much more effective. Still, an atmosphere of dread is nicely maintained and the climax, whilst less spectacular than Corman's version, is effectively melodramatic.moreless

    • In addition to Roger Corman's famous 1960 film version (mentioned in the review), Poe's classic story was also the basis of a British B-movie of 1949, directed by Ivan Barnett and starring a young actress newly out of drama school and calling herself "Gwendoline Watford". (She soon shortened her forename to "Gwen" and became a British TV star and award-winner during the 1950s.) There was also a famous silent film of the story made in France in 1928. It ran just 48 minutes and was directed by Jean Epstein. His assistant, soon to become a famous director himself, was Luis Bunuel.
