In a union made in geek heaven, Felicia Day has joined the Mystery Science Theater 3000 revival. The Guild star will play Kinga Forrester, daughter of mad scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester, Day revealed on Twitter.
Yes it's true, I am going to play Dr Forrester's daughter on new @MST3K! Will terrorize the hell outta @jonahray! https://t.co/yjp6f8QzMk
— Felicia Day (@feliciaday) November 23, 2015Meltdown's Jonah Ray will host the series, which will feature comedians Hampton Young and Baron Vaughn, and Crow T. Robot and Tom Servow. MST3K creator Joel Hodgson also teased that there will be one more Mad joining the revival cast.
Day's casting comes less than two weeks after Hodgson launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring back the cult classic. So far, the campaign has already surpassed its $2 million goal, meaning fans are guaranteed three new episodes of the movie-riffing series. With 17 days left to go, the Kickstarter is now aiming for $5.5 million and twelve episodes.
Do you like how the new MST3K cast is shaping up?
So happy it's back! I still watch the oldies a lot.
Over casting, I do agree that it's another era and a new age. We should probably have some fresh blood. This may distance some fans from the old days, but will likely bring in more new viewers. If thiis was going to be a one-off thing or just for the sake of nostalgia, I'd say bring back the old cast(s), cool. But, Joel is gunning for a full reboot, potentially to bring the series back fully. A new cast is an obvious business choice.
If you see Joel's introductions, he talks about each of the new cast as being fun to work with and really "getting" MST3K. He even mentions that Crow's and Tom Servo's voice actors were killing it with ad libs in between running lines in the test takes.
Anyway, I'd rather give money to a fresh cast that roots the show in the present and can move it forward (with some of the originals in the writing room), rather than a reunion cast for mostly a nostalgic one-off.
Or has that changed?
If they wanted to go for the original line up of Hodgson, Weinstein, and Beaulieu they should be able to as they were together on Cinematic Titanic which has pretty much ended. If they wanted to go with the most well known voices then Murphy would be the choice since he held the role the longest.
While the two groups don't really interact they have stated that they are friendly and just focus on different genres of movies which Cinematic Titanic focusing on older movies like the series did and Rifftrax riffing more on modern movies. The only crossover between the two is Mary Jo Pehl who was Pearl Forrester on the show.
Hopefully everyone can be involved in some form as guest stars for a few episodes. Maybe not during the first season if it gets one but perhaps if there is another cycle.
But when both sides are supposedly open to the idea of working together, but neither side does, it seems like there's something amiss.
Chances are all of them, whether Rifftrax or Cinematic Titanic, have other jobs and commitments so it would be a matter of getting everyone on the same schedule to put together a track. This seemed to be the main reason that Cinematic Titanic stopped, everyone just had their own things going on and didn't live near each other.
With this new iteration of the series they might be able to have things be more stable with a new cast dedicated to making content. If it works out then maybe one by one the old cast can come in as guests to do tracks with the new cast. If the new series is successful I could see them bringing together the old casts for reunions.
