Meltdown's Jonah Ray will host the series, which will feature comedians Hampton Young and Baron Vaughn, and Crow T. Robot and Tom Servow. MST3K creator Joel Hodgson also teased that there will be one more Mad joining the revival cast.

Meh. The more I hear about this revival, the less excited I am.

I hope they don't kill off Felicia Day AGAIN.

Never really cared for Jonah Ray in the Nerdist podcasts.

Well, I was excited about MST3K, but not so much anymore...

I'm still more or less of the mind-frame that if they are going to keep the same characters they should have the same actors (or voice actors), but as long as the characters are meant to be different, then I likey. I hope they have the same voice actors for Crow and Tom Servo. I miss Joel in the show, but he's always involved, and now he has a new and fun home in Other Space -- which I felt all warm and fuzzy and like I was back in the ship with the MST3K crowd. Mike was good, too, but wasn't quite the same in my books.

So happy it's back! I still watch the oldies a lot.

A friend of mine actually had this conversation several months ago about the Joel vs Mike thing. We both ended up agreeing that Joel tended to be consistently better at the skit stuff, and indeed the skit stuff was better written during his day. We felt Mike's jokes were generally more consistent and landedbetter, but he mostly fell flat at the skits. We did stay in disagreement over the overall eras. I feel that the Mike years were generally funnier throughout and had less dud episodes. But, it's opinion.

Over casting, I do agree that it's another era and a new age. We should probably have some fresh blood. This may distance some fans from the old days, but will likely bring in more new viewers. If thiis was going to be a one-off thing or just for the sake of nostalgia, I'd say bring back the old cast(s), cool. But, Joel is gunning for a full reboot, potentially to bring the series back fully. A new cast is an obvious business choice.

It's cool that MST3k is coming back. So now Dr. Forrester will have a daughter? Cool. Will Frank and Mike be back, too? What channel will it be on? Not one of those internet channels hopefully. Adult Swim should get it. What jokes will they tell now.l? And what movies will they show? Like to see them mock Freddie Got Fingered and Gigli.

So far I'm totally OK with the casting. I mean, at least these people are generally known. The original show had a bunch of nobodies! 😋

If you see Joel's introductions, he talks about each of the new cast as being fun to work with and really "getting" MST3K. He even mentions that Crow's and Tom Servo's voice actors were killing it with ad libs in between running lines in the test takes.

Anyway, I'd rather give money to a fresh cast that roots the show in the present and can move it forward (with some of the originals in the writing room), rather than a reunion cast for mostly a nostalgic one-off.

Everyone groaning at the recasting needs to read the Kickstarter page again. It's not an issue of getting the original cast back -- Joel said they would have no problem, IF that was what they wanted to do. But they don't. Joel said MST3K was always intended to have a rotating cast and the new faces are in line with his original plan.

Wouldn't it be impossible to get the original cast back? I thought the Hodgson crew and the Nelson crew had pretty much gone their separate ways: the latter doing the Rifftrax stuff which Hodgson's posse aren't involved with.

Or has that changed?

It would really depend on who they were trying to get. The original cast was Hodgson, Josh Weinstein, and Trace Beaulieu who are now part of Cinematic Titanic while Nelson, Corbett, and Murphy make up Rifftrax. Of course everything overlapped. Weinstein left after season one and Kevin Murphy took over the remainder of the series while Trace Beaulieu stayed on all the way up through the movie.

If they wanted to go for the original line up of Hodgson, Weinstein, and Beaulieu they should be able to as they were together on Cinematic Titanic which has pretty much ended. If they wanted to go with the most well known voices then Murphy would be the choice since he held the role the longest.

While the two groups don't really interact they have stated that they are friendly and just focus on different genres of movies which Cinematic Titanic focusing on older movies like the series did and Rifftrax riffing more on modern movies. The only crossover between the two is Mary Jo Pehl who was Pearl Forrester on the show.

Hopefully everyone can be involved in some form as guest stars for a few episodes. Maybe not during the first season if it gets one but perhaps if there is another cycle.

Judging from a radio interview Hodgson did a few years back, it sounds like Jim Mallon was the one he had problems with. Nothing blow-out serious, but a lot of disagreements on creative stuff involving the show.

Joel said he was open to any former cast member stopping by in the new show; all they have to do is contact him.

Right, and Bill Corbett posted saying Joel and his people could join them any time.

But when both sides are supposedly open to the idea of working together, but neither side does, it seems like there's something amiss.

It could be a matter of scheduling. According to Nelson, riffing a movie takes a while. You have to watch the movie multiple times sometimes going scene by scene, write the jokes you are going to say, and then record the actual commentary track which can take multiple takes. That is only taking the tacks into accounts, the live performances probably take a lot more in planning and execution.

Chances are all of them, whether Rifftrax or Cinematic Titanic, have other jobs and commitments so it would be a matter of getting everyone on the same schedule to put together a track. This seemed to be the main reason that Cinematic Titanic stopped, everyone just had their own things going on and didn't live near each other.

With this new iteration of the series they might be able to have things be more stable with a new cast dedicated to making content. If it works out then maybe one by one the old cast can come in as guests to do tracks with the new cast. If the new series is successful I could see them bringing together the old casts for reunions.

Really though - it would be nice to have at least ONE person from the original run of MST3K return. Even if it's Joel to play the other Mad - that would be nice. Oh well - I'll probably still watch it but I'm not as excited as I would be say if they had gotten the whole Cinematic Titanic cast involved.

I don't know about the re-casting. Maybe getting all the original stars would be too expensive. All I do know is my money is going to good place, because Charlie/Felicia is a good fit for this show. PS I need to check out the "GUILD" on netflix already.

And the worst-kept secret is out of the bag. Honestly, this feels less like MST3K and more like lame stunt casting. Felicia Day is... alright. Jonah Ray is.. fine. Neither of them are really known for this kind of movie-riffing comedy, they're known as geek-friendly entertainers. I dunno, I hope this works out, but it feels like it's already off the rails.

I might be more optimistic, but I kind of agree. Neither seems very funny to me either. However if they are big fans of the show, they might surprise us. I'm glad it's being done because Rifftrax doesn't really replace the show. So there's concern about the quality of humor, but we'll definitely be checking it out. Just like we'll continue to go see most of the Riffrax Live events.

"Funny", that's an interesting point. I find Day's and Ray's (oh god they rhyme) work "amusing", but not usually "funny". I hadn't thought about it that way before until you said that.

Cleverness doesn't always get the soul of humor. But if Joel says they "get it", I'll leave the door open for them.

I was so excited about this crazy MST3K reboot... until yesterday, when I read that they are recasting the parts, including the robot voices. So I will just watch me some MST3K original flavor and some Rifftrax and pretend I never heard about this reboot because Mike is better than Joel anyway and always has been.

Hmm, I guess we differ. I'll take a new cast who have a chance at believably dropping some Reign & Superwholock references. As much as I liked the old cast, that was 30 years ago. To new audiences it would be like watching your parents and grandparents try to be funny. IMO.

Cinematic Titanic is great too, even if it's no longer in production.
