Deep in the African jungle, two pilots sets out an expedition to find a lost woman to get a reward or something like that. They come across one being worshiped by a stereotyped tribe thinking she's their goddess. And then something about love and fights happens. Even though this 1948 gem stars George Reeves of Adventures of Superman fame, Jungle Goddess is just way less interesting not to make the 50 worst list.
Our short for this experiment is the 1939 serial The Phantom Creeps where Bela Lugosi plays a mad scientist (DUH!) in a desire to destroy the world. Chapter 1: The Menacing Power is being used here.
This film was really, really slow. Actually it made me depressed for some odd reason. I found the riffing here to be a bit sparse. I had a few laughs, but the slowness of the film isn't much to work with, even with French fried potatoes. The riffing on the short on the other hand is really good, as J&TB gets to do a bunch of delightful Bela imitations and work with the serial's cheesy storyline. The skits were a mixed bag. I didn't think Bela's OK Discoveries was funny, it just drags. The same went for the scope sketch, but the My White Goddess skit was pretty clever, and the Two White Devils visit was amusing. A mixed review but I'll call this episode average.
