Red Zone Cuba is a masterpiece of riffs. The boys (and MJP) outdid themselves on this one.

Considering what absolute dreck the film itself is, this episode is a particularly noteworthy achievement. I find that many of the more enjoyable episodes target a movie that is somewhat watchable, or can atleast hold together some semblence of a plot or story.

In this episode, the only thing you can follow is the riffing because C.Francis's edits and story are so thin and fragmented. The riffs are gut-bustingly hilarious and razor sharp, and they manage to prop the movie up for the entire run of the episode (similar, but superior, to the other Coleman Francis movies done by MST3K - Skydivers, Beast of Yucca Flats).

This was an early favorite of mine, so I may be a bit biased. But after seeing most of the series now (and collecting most of it), I still thoroughly enjoy this one when I re-visit it.

Some favorite lines of mine, that come to mind:

Mike says of the train conductor/yard master - "John Carradine makes Keith Richards look dewey"

    "I'm Cherokee Jack"

"Do you guys think that Chastine guy is cute?"

In holding pen, awaiting execution one character bellows with a NY accent....'Hey Guard' sounding like 'Hey God..'
Mike inserts ".. it's me Margaret" This episode is worth owning, for sure. It is available from Rhino.moreless
  • Hilarious Francis Coleman AKA \"Curly\" and his two goofball cohorts try to stay away from the law by \"joining\" a force that heads down to Cuba (an army of 7)

This has got to be one of the best MST3K\'s ever! The only reason it isnt a \"10\" is because the ending is a little lacking. Even the title song \"Night Train to Mondo Fina\" provides fodder for many wisecracks. Mike and the bots point out most of the hilarious ways that Francis tried to save money on this movie, from bad props to bad extras, to repeated footage, it is all there. Why is it that characters like Francis are so easy to make fun of? ...espescially when they are trying to be serious. This episode is a \"must-see\"moreless
  • The least likely counterrevolutionaries ever.

This movie pretends to be a political thriller. I say pretends because there isn't really anything political or thrilling from the beginning to the end.

A man winds up in prison for some reason. There, he starts rambling to his fellow inmates about conditions under Communism in Cuba. This would indeed be a worthy topic for a film... if we were talking about a cast and crew who had talent. But we're not. So it isn't, here.

Anyway, after much planning (they talk about it while they're out on the chain gang), the man and his friends try to break out and run to liberate the island nation.

    Guess they didn't make it...

This movie isn't even as good as the storyboards for a real thriller.moreless
  • so so funny, so so bad

Next to "Manos: Hands of Fate", this is the worst movie I've seen the MST3K boys watch. Oh man, fist off, I have no idea what was going on. Secondly, just when I thought I knew what was going on they would totally abandon that plot line and start on another. There were so many orphaned plot lines in this movie; I doubt you could afford to adopt them all to keep the family together. So so funnymoreless
  • Red Zone Cuba is another top-notch MST episode.

    "Great"
The second Coleman Francis movie to be skewered, Red Zone Cuba is the typical MST movie. The plot, if it can be called that, involves two ex-cons and a fugitive who get involved with mercenaries who plan to invade Cuba. It's so bad that Mike turns into Carol Channing, then Vicki Lawrence. Also, Dr. Forrester gets beat up by mobsters who mistake him for Frank, who is in for 50 large. All in all, a typically great show.moreless
