  • Sidehackers, the first of the motorcycle movies riffed by the MST3K crew.

    8.5
    "Great"
This is the first of a number of biker movies from the 60/70's done by the Mystery Science Theater 3000 crew.

This early episode of the show is where they really started to hit their stride, there are a number of movies from the first season that were also good, but the second season is where a number of call backs were getting good.

The movie itself is just plain bad, the plot is dumb and the writing is like a boiler plate of exploitation.

The host segments were good, and this episode has one of the best of the early shows musical bumps.

Well worth watching, and easy to find as it is a Rhino release.moreless
  • More than you ever wanted to know about the sport of sidehacking.

    10
    "Perfect"
At the time the original film was made, the late 1960s, there must have been some kind of regional interest in the title sport. Sidehacking involves having one rider drive a motorcycle and another person in a compartment off to the side, leaning over during turns.

That's it. The appeal must have been to see if the passenger, known as a sidehacker, was going to live through the moves. It certainly didn't add anything to the actual driver's ability to win.

And it doesn't add anything to the movie, either.

The 'story,' such as it is, tells us of a couple of rival bikers who hate each other, and get into a blood feud after one of them killed the other's fiancee.

There is no acting talent anywhere in this movie. Neither is there hygiene: you will wish someone had gone through the filmilng sites with a power hose, because the primary visual motif is 'dirt.' Everyone looks like they need a bath.

Also, for a feud story, it's surprisingly dull: mostly the bikers just sit around drunk. Sometimes a fight will break out. That's it.

You will not care about any of these characters. Once again, the best thing about the film is the jokes our beloved crew reads over it.

A funny early episode, after they made their switch from local TV to the big time. It's a good thing sidehacking didn't stick with us. Real bike races are far better than this film. For that matter, so is going to the local bike shop and looking in the window.moreless

    • Tom: (describing J. C.) He looks like Budd Friedman. I hope he doesn't try to hug everybody.

    • Rommel: (to Rita) We both think alike, don't we? Crow: We both share a brain!

    • (Credit appearing in the opening: Produced By Ross Hagen) Crow: So that's how Ross Hagen got in the film... he slept with the producer!

    ADD NOTES
    • Due to a violent scene (eventually cut by Best Brains), all movies would be screened the whole way through. The chief person to do that would be Frank Conniff.

    • To elaborate, there was a nasty rape scene that the Brains didn't know about as when first screening it, they didn't watch it all the way through. From that point on, they watched every movie, all the way through, with Frank being the guy who chose which ones he thought they should riff.

    • This episode is available on VHS and DVD from Rhino Home Video.

  • ALLUSIONS (4)

    ADD ALLUSIONS
    • Abbott and Costello (J.C. and Rommel are arguing in what amounts to gibberish) Tom Servo: I'm not asking you who's on second. Crow: Who's on first. Tom Servo: I don't know. Joel, Crow, and Tom Servo: Third base! These are lines taken from Abbott & Costello's classic routine "Who's On First," most likely to show the amount of confusion involved in the ongoing scene.

    • Budd Friedman: Mentioned by Tom when J. C. and his crew are in Rommel's garage, Budd Friedman is the creator of the world famous Improv comedy club in Los Angeles. Tom's comment about hugging everybody comes from Budd's hosting of the An Evening At The Improv stand-up show, where he hugged every comic when they came on stage.

    • Fanta: Mentioned by Crow at the beginning of the movie, Fanta is a brand of soft drink made by Coca-Cola. It's best known for its orange soda, which Crow mentions.

    • Orange Julius: Mentioned by Joel at the beginning of the movie, Orange Julius refers to both the fruit smoothie drink and the company that makes it.
