    A plumber, John Horner, is arrested just before Christmas and charged with stealing a famous jewel, the Blue Carbuncle, from Lady Morcar. He denies the theft - but he has a criminal record, and all the evidence is against him. After Holmes's doorman finds the Carbuncle in a Christmas goose, Holmes uses an old hat to track the goose to a poultry dealer, then traps the servant who stole the jewel and framed the plumber.moreless

    An unhappy wife learns that her husband, Colonel Barclay, cheated her earlier fiance, leaving him disabled and in exile.     Tuppence is curious about a cryptic message in a newspaper's personal column, suggesting a romantic rendezvous. Testing her theory, she talks Tommy into attending the Three Arts Ball, and later they visit the cafe which seems to be the meeting point. They hear a cry from another room, and Tuppence finds Lady Merivale there, dying. Her final words are "Bingo did it". Captain Bingo Hale, Lady Merivale's lover, is arrested - but then the Beresfords turn from witnesses against him to trying to prove his innocence.moreless
