This was the third in a lavish trio of BBC telemovies shown in consecutive years in the late 1970s, all based on period thrillers. The first was Geoffrey Household's "Rogue Male", with Peter O'Toole, in 1976; the second was John Buchan's "The Three Hostages", featuring Barry Foster as Richard Hannay and shown over Christmas, 1977. All three films were directed by Clive Donner, whose movie career had declined since reaching a high point during the mid-60s. "She Fell Among Thieves" is a preposterous yarn, very dated but played with a straight face by an impressive cast. Malcolm McDowell is the boyish hero Chandos - winning the loyalty of a fallen woman when he courteously addresses her as "My Lady" - whilst Michael Jayston, puffing on a briar pipe, makes cryptic remarks as the representative of authority. Eileen Atkins enjoys herself hugely as Vanity Fair, a villainess.moreless
