  • This was the very first of the Mystery! America Mystery! Specials.

This movie is based extremely loosely on the Tony Hillerman novel. The main theme, that a Skinwalker may be responsible for a murder on the Navajo Reservation is the same, as are the two main characters Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and Officer Jim Chee, and the actual murderer, whom I won't name here.

However the motive for the murder, and most of the secondary plots and characters are very different. But, Skinwalkers is still a very well written and enjoyable production, with fantastic acting.

Because of unfavorable weather in Northern Arizona where the story takes place, the movie was actually filmed right in my backyard, in the foothills of the Superstition Mountains in Central Arizona.

Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn is played by Wes Studi of the Cherokee Nation, and Officer Jim Chee is played by Adam Beach of the Ojibwa Nation.

When I first read the article in our local newspaper about the filming and casting of Skinwalkers, I looked up Wes Studi and as soon as I saw him I said YES, that IS Joe Leaphorn. He was exactly as I had pictured him when I read all of Tony Hillerman's "Navajo Mysteries"!

I not only highly recommend this movie, but also the other two Leaphorn and Chee America Mystery! Specials, A Thief Of Time, and Coyote Waits.

I wish they would do MORE!moreless
