  • Adam blows chunks...again...

This episode makes you question a lot before your next travels. Thinking of that cruise for the spring?? The whirlpool or vortex myth, shows what could happen to a person overboard or ever a ship that gets caught in vortexes that naturally occur in water. So you are thinking now maybe lets head North, away from the water, to the land of snow. Maybe not after hearing the myth that a snow plow can blow a car off the freeway. This supposedly happens when the plow is driving, plow up at high speeds. Well it turns out that there is no way that a plow could really blow you off the road. They make less wind then a passing semi. It was also shown that a whirlpool won’t do anything to a big boat, but as a solo person, there could be issues.moreless

Why Would Myth Busters use such an antique (snow plow). I have been blown off the highway on two occasions in the past. The modern dump truck based snow plows with wing plowa are so much more areodynamic to the detriment to other vehicles when they are running on the highway (55 to 65 mph in NY).

Both times were in winter, in severe storm conditions. The roads were covered with several inches of drifting snow and there was already some storm related wind. The vehicle was a Volvo 144 on both occasions.

I can see using an older model to keep costs down but their choice was lame in every sense. The vehicle should have at least been capable of plowing snow and in generating some srosswind.

I love the show as much as I love the show Macguyver but please don\\\'t cheap out on us.moreless
  • Whirlpools and Snow Plows

    7.0
Jamie and Adam try to see if boats and people can get sucked into a whirlpool. The Junior Mythbusters are supposed to be trying to see if the air of a passing snow plow can knock a car coming the opposite way off the road.

Now, the snow plow thing is a bit idiotic on the surface, because for the plow to be funneling air into the oncoming traffic lane, the plow would have to be backward. You see, snow plows are designed to push snow OFF the road, not onto it, so they are slanted to the right, not left.

The entire show is taken up with the m trying to get the truck with the plow on it to work. This made the entire thing into an episode of “Junkyard Mishaps”. It’s one thing if the Mythbuster team has trouble replicating a situation, but it’s just plain stupid (and bad television) watching them trying to get a truck to roll in a straight line.

Oh lord, I loved this episode. Adam and Jamie tested out the myth that a whirlpool could suck down a ship (which they busted) and that a whirlpool could suck down a person (they came to the consensus that it was possible after filling an enormous tank with water and creating a whirlpool, then having Adam go in and see what it'd do to him: it made him blow oddly red colored chunks). The build team, on the other hand, had to deal with a demonic snow plow in the myth that a snow plow could blow a car off the road. After Grant was taken on a wild ride by the aforementioned evil snow plow when the brakes didn't work, and they used wood to make the actual blow even larger, they busted that myth, too.

Episodes like this are the reasons I watch the show-a host blowing chunks makes great television ;)moreless
