Episode Summary

EDIT

Could Luke really have swung across a huge chasm on the end of a rope while holding Princess Leia and trying to escape Stormtroopers? Could Hans' ingenuity of stuffing Luke inside a Tauntaun have saved him from the bitterly cold and deadly elements of Hoth? And could the primitive weapons of the Ewoks realistically take down some of DarthVader’s most sophisticated weapons?

The Star Wars Special has been a long time coming, since the crew have had a difficult time over the years finding myths where the outcome couldn't be explained by "use of the force", but it's been on the wish list for the show for very long.

The challenge was issued to fans at The Citadel of Myths forum who came up with all three myths that aired on the show. That part was well done (by the fans). As for the actual testing? Not so much.

I understand that when you're working with something as iconic as Star Wars there has to be some fluff in the form of people in costumes, R2D2 replica robots and that sort of stuff, but it went overboard in this episode and ended up overshadowing what little science you could have extrapolated from the tests.

The Luke and Leia belt swing was tested and found plausible, which I have no complaints about. There was just way too much fluff in the form of people dressed up as storm troopers and what not and not an ounce of actual science in there.

The Tauntaun Survival test was riddled with mistakes and poor execution all the way through and could most certainly stand a revisit. Especially because all the fantastic science that you can make references to in a situation like that almost wasn't touched at all. I call do-over!

The Ewok Log Swing looked promising. Is there any chance in the world that two giant tree trunks crushing an armored car could ever be boring? Apparantly so. Again, here was a chance to talk some hard science about forces and make some calculations that would have led to a much better build, but instead it seemed like they just went for "Let's get some tree trunks, a car, some telephone poles and some cables and just go for it!" And where the team didn't fill up on obvious shots at actual science, they once again filled the air time with fluff. The highlight of this entire segment was Kari in her R2D2 dress, which says a lot for a show that usually has so much more to offer! (We always love to see Miss Byron, whatever she's wearing, but she can't carry the show on her own and shouldn't have to)

All in all I think this a good candidate for worst MythBusters episode of all time. The only good thing about it (besides Kari in that dress) is that it can only get better from here!moreless

The challenge was issued to the fans by the producers of the show because they had wanted to do a Star Wars special for years, but couldn't come up with anything testable where negative results couldn't be refuted by "use of the force" by die hard Star Wars fans.
