  • I would watch this as an example of common sitcom approaches of the late 60s and early 70s, in this case the episode fits the bill with no apologies.

Nanny shows the city the real value of children and the trees they enjoy.

Well, I have to admit that even at the age of ten, I found this series a little silly, the theme song sort of an embarassing "Cowsills-clone" (apparently it was written by the group that wrote "Never My Love"). And I still do. But I also admit that unlike some programs, it's not worse than I remember it either.

Richard Long is pretty funny in this episode, but then there is a bit of humor potential in the "widower" men common to sitcoms of the period. Juliet Mills' character just always seems too precious, unlike the other "magic" lasses ("Bewitched", "Jeannie", "The Flying Nun") she is straight saccharine in her cape and nylons. Unlike 99% of television characters, Miss Phoebe Figalilly is never slightly vindictive or even in the least bit bothered - just furrowing her brow before working a charm. But this episode plays straight to it all, Ellen Corby and Henry Jones are scripted just as impossibly idealistic when it comes to the issue at hand. The best scenes are probably the ones at City Hall, as Nanny and the kids go from office to office in a typical beaurocratic shuffle. Also good is that what saves the tree ultimately is the fact that union rules mean the workers with the chainsaw need to knock off at 4:30.

There is something that seems honest in this show, despite possibly raising viewer blood sugar levels.moreless
