Naruto has been resting in the hospital for the past three days with Shikamaru surprisingly watching him on the side. Sakura visits the hospital as well to drop off a flower for Lee. As soon as she leaves, an unexpected guest visits Lee...Gaara! He attempts to kill the sleeping ninja, until Naruto and Shikamaru catch grip of him and stall him. Gaara uses this time to tell about his past, and it wasted enough time for Gai to show up break everything up.

This is what I hate the most about Naruto. When two gangs are confronting each other, do you think they're going to tell each other their pasts and whimper about how hard their life has been? No, they're going to beat the crap out of each other, not have a contest to see who had the crappier life. I would sympathize for Gaara on his past, if it was presented and executed better.moreless

Baki busts into the room and chides Temari and Kankuro for letting Gaara out of their sight, because now he is gone. Meanwhile, Sakura is back at the flower shop and Ino pokes fun at her until she learns that Sakura is there to get another flower for Rock Lee. Sakura goes to the hopital to give Lee the flower. Naruto is also at the hospital recuperating from his training with Jiraiya. Shikamaru is visiting Naruto when Naruto wakes up. They go to see Choji and tease him with some food. Gaara has entered Lee's room and is attempting to kill him when he is stopped by....moreless

Naruto finally wakes up in the hospital. Shikamaru and Naruto find Garra who is about to kill Rock Lee. That was a great timing. They came just in time lucky for Rock Lee. Shikamaru stops him. Naruto and Shikamaru both hear the childhood of Garra. Garra's childhood is not the best and one of the worst. In hearing Garra's childhood, Naruto notices that he and Garra are the same. They both have been sealed with a demon of some kind. Garra's childhood was full of bad times because of the thing sealed inside him. Overall, this episode was great because I got to learn a little bit more about Garra and his childhood, which again is a terrible one.moreless

    • Shikamaru: (Thinking about Gaara) This guy is a freak!

    • Shikamaru: (Thinking) A sand spirit? Gaara: Its name is Shukaku and it's the living incarnation of an old monk of the Sand Village who had been sealed up in a jar of tea. Shikamaru: Yeah, some kind of demonic jutsu. But to use it on a baby? Even before it's born? Man, that's creepy.

    • Shikamaru: You're just lucky I'm around or you wouldn't have any visitors.

    • Shikamaru: Would you knock it off?! Now listen, you don't want to be freaking out the day before a competition. Resting can be the best thing. (Naruto stops and sits down) Shikamaru: Huh? Are you okay? Is something wrong? (Naruto's stomach growls) Naruto: Yeah, I'm kinda starving. Shikamaru: Man, is that all? You gotta stop scaring me like that.

    • (The sand stops moving in the timer) Shikamaru: Huh? The sand stopped! What's up with that? Did they forget to wind it or something? What a drag.

    • Shikamaru: What's your problem? You already beat him once in the competition. Do you have some kind of personal grudge against him or something? Gaara: I have nothing against him. It's nothing that complicated, I simply want to kill him. That's all. Naruto: You know what? You're sick in the head!

    • Shikamaru: Man this guy is annoying. I liked him better when he was in a coma.

    • Naruto: We should eat this is front of Choji. It'll drive him crazy! Shikamaru: Man, that's mean...I like it.

    • Naruto: Shikamaru, when's the final competition begin? Shikamaru: Uh, tomorrow. Naruto: What?! (Naruto grabs Shikamaru) Are you crazy?! Why the heck didn't you wake me up sooner?! I can't be lying around at a time like this, I gotta be getting ready! And pervy sage, where's pervy sage? That old coot's supposed to be supervising my training! Shikimaru: Hey! Come kid, get a grip! I don't know what your talking about.

    • Gaara: I'll say it once more. If you get in my way...I'll kill you.

    • Gaara: All the same, I will kill you... Just you wait...I'll kill you all.

    • Young Gaara: What am I?

    • Naruto: (Shaking) We're so different...but we're so close to being the same.

    • Gaara: The jutsu that gave me birth had unbalanced something in my mind. Even the fools in my village finally reallized I have....emotional problems.

    • Gaara: Those who get to be too strong are out to become feared.

    • Gaara: My father, the Kazekage, created me as his ultimate weapon, but I eventually became a threat to the very village I was meant to save. By the time I was six, I became a figure of terror to the villagers. To them I was a relic of the past that they wished would disappear. So, you see, I had failed at the one purpose for which I was given life. What then was left for me in this existence? Why go on living? For a long time I couldn't find an answer to that But in order to live you need a purpose. To exist for no reason is the same as being dead. Shikamaru: What is this guy talking about? Naruto: (Thinking) I know just what he means. Exactly. He's...he's the same as me! Gaara: Then, in time, the answer came to me. To put it simply, my reason for living is in the killing of others. For years I lived in fear of those who were sent to murder me, but now I am at peace. I killed many would-be assassins, and it was while I was doing it that the truth was made clear to me. I live solely for myself. I love only myself. As it was the death of my mother that first gave me life, now it is the death of others that sustains me, that makes me almost happy to be alive. And there's no end to it. As long as there are still people to kill in this great, wide, crowded world, I will never disappear.

    • Shikamaru: That's not what a parent should do. What a twisted way to show love. Gaara: Love? Don't measure me by your values. Family? Let me tell you what kind of link I have with them. They are just clumps of meat linked together with hate and murderous intent. ~Japanese version

    • (Ino enters Chouji's hospital room with a basket of fruit) Ino: Hey Chouji, feeling any better? Chouji: Ino! (Thinking) Big-boned guys must be in now! ~Japanese version

    • Gaara: I grew up being overprotected, spoiled, and left alone. ~Japanese version

    • Naruto: He's no match me for me, because I have a real monster inside me! Gaara: So, you have a monster inside of you? In that case, we're the same. ~Japanese version

    • Gaara: I am only a relic of the past that they want to get rid of, so why do I exist and live? I have found no answer to that question. Yet, to live I need a reason to exist. Shikamaru: What is this guy talking about? Naruto: (Thinking) I understand. This guy...he's just like me. Gaara: Therefore, I exist to kill everyone but myself. That is the answer I came up with. ~Japanese version

    • Gaara: To exist for no reason is the same as being dead. Gaara's line from the dub is very similar to Kiba's line from the third episode of Wolf's Rain, where he says, "Everything dies, it's a natural part of life, but if your life has no purpose, then you're dead already".
