Watch Gaara's left shoulder. In some of the previous episodes the wound on his shoulder is gone. But during the beginning of this episode, we see the wound again.
Near the end of episode 79, when Naruto and Gaara hit the ground, the ground is mostly grass. But, in episode 80, the ground is mostly dirt, very little grass.
Near the end of episode 79, when Naruto and Gaara hit the ground, Naruto is on Gaara's right. But, during episode 80, Naruto is on his left.
Kakashi: Better make it quick, the Hokage's funeral has already begun.
Yugao: And you, Kakashi? Paying respects to Obito? Instead of constantly inventing new excuses for being late, why not just come here earlier?
Kakashi: I did. I've been here since dawn. This place makes me think of the mistakes I did in the past, and I've made so many of them.
Kisame: Well, it survived, but barely. The damage is extensive.
Itachi: Not long ago it was at the height of it's glory. Look at it now.
Kisame: Hmm... You sound almost sad. Don't tell me you still have feelings for your old home?
Itachi: No. None.
Kakashi: This place makes me think of the mistakes I've made in the past, and I've made so many of them.
Kurenai: It's raining.
Asuma: Even the heavens weep.
Kankuro: (Thinking about Gaara) I never thought I'd see this! He's had it!
Gaara: Love? Is that the thing that makes him so strong?
Gaara: Why would you do this for anyone but yourself?
Naruto: Because they saved me from myself. They rescued me from my loneliness. They were the first to accept me for who I am. They're my friends.
Naruto: It's almost unbearable, isn't it? The feeling of being all alone? I know that feeling. I've been there in that dark and lonely place, but now there are others, other people who mean a lot to me. I care more about them than I do myself, and I won't let anyone hurt them. That's why I won't ever give up. I will stop you, even if I have to kill you.
Gaara: I won't cease to exist! I won't!
Kabuto: Time to call it a day.
Kakashi: Are you going to run away from me again?
Kabuto: That would be too obvious. Why should I show my hand when it's so much fun keeping you in the dark?
Naruto: What a relief...
Naruto: Iruka-sensei...why do people risk their lives for others?
Iruka: When a person dies, he disappears...along with his past, current lifestyle, and his future. Many people die in missions and wars. They die easily and in surprisingly simple ways. Hayate was one of them. Those who die have goals and dreams, but everyone has something as important as those. Parents, siblings, friends, lovers...people who are important to you. They trust and help each other. The bond between the people important to you ever since birth. And the sting that binds them becomes thicker and stronger as time goes by. It's beyond reason. Those bound to you by that string will do that...because it's important...
Naruto: Yes, I think I understand somewhat, but...it's painful when someone dies.
~Japanese version
Gaara: Why do you fight so hard for others?
Naruto: Because, they pulled me out of the hell I was in. They acknowledged me! They are important to me!
~Japanese version
Naruto: Under no circumstances is a ninja allowed to cry. The mission comes first. Remember that and never show any emotions.
~Japanese version
Gaara: (Thinking) One day, I too will be able to... (Speaking) Kankuro, Temari, I'm sorry!
(Temari and Kankuro look at each other with confused looks)
Kankuro: Uh, don't mention it.
~Japanese version
(Kankuro and Temari appear to help out Gaara)
Gaara: It's okay, I give up.
~Japanese version
Gaara: Why is he so strong?
(Gaara remembers Yashamaru's words)
Yashamaru: Love is something that you give freely to those you care about. It is a beautiful heart that protects you.
Gaara: Love... He found love.
~Japanese version
Itachi: It's a shame to see this village in such a state.
Kisame: That doesn't sound like you at all. Are you starting to regret what you did?
Itachi: Not at all.
~Japanese version
YTV Airdate: May 11, 2007
First appearance of Kisame Hoshigaki, though he isn't introduced formally until the next episode.
When this episode first aired on Cartoon Network, there were technical difficulties that occurred twice, thus ending the episode five minutes early without the conclusion.
Original Airdate: April 21, 2004
Original Episode Title: The Third, Forever...
Romaji Episode Title: Sandaime yo, Eikyuu ni...
Kanji Episode Title: 三代目よ、永久に…
Naruto is the first person to ever defeat Gaara.
In this episode, Obito is mentioned for the first time, and we find out why Kakashi is always late.
This is the first episode to not use a title card. Instead, the episode's title appears in the bottom of the screen while the footage is playing, with no character saying the title.
In the manga, Itachi appeared before the funeral began, in the anime he appears after.
Itachi makes his first appearance outside of flashbacks in this episode.
When Kankuro and Temari escort Gaara away, you can see a small leaf in the swirl of sand lying on the ground. This is an indication of the popular Japanese belief that a tanuki, which Shukaku is, can transform itself by placing a leaf on its forehead.
