Among the most charming episodes of the series is this delightful story, in which Martha (Ann Doran) is unexpectedly visited by an erstwhile beau - at the very moment Herbert (Arthur Space) has hurt her feelings by being persuaded to change his plans to take her to a dance. The old beau's popularity with everyone in the Brown family distresses Herbert, who is characteristically reluctant to show his feelings. Jealousy and hurt feelings reach a peak when, at an old-fashioned box supper, Herbert loses out on a bid for Martha's meal. In a sequence which is as hilarious as it is wistful, Herbert winds up eating dinner with a loquacious farm woman (Maxine Gates), who also involves him in a wild charleston contest! Circumstances cause Herbert to soften, for others to see another side of his character, and for Martha to express her quiet devotion to him - as her old beau returns to his own home, and his wife of 25 years. This is a wonderful episode in which some splendid character actors of long-standing have a chance to shine.moreless
