Akron was the #15 seed, but they were my pick for the huge upset of the first round. Turns out I was wrong as Morehead State took care of that one. Notre Dame showed a lot of weaknesses in this game though. Their hustle is something I have to call into question in future rounds. Despite finishing the game in a strong way, they let Akron control the tempo longer than any #15 seed ever should.

A decent enough Friday afternoon game I suppose, although I would have liked for the historic upset of the Fighting Shamrocks to have taken place.moreless
  • YAY!!

OK, so this was your basic #2 seed beating an overmatched #15 seed, but it's Notre Dame's first Tourney win in three years and only their second since 2003. They now have a reasonable chance to get to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2003. This is also the first time that ND has been a #2 seed in exactly 30 years.

I think fans always get nervous when the score is too close for comfort and this game was close enough well into the second half. ND led by four at the half and held Akron scoreless the first five minutes or so to star the second half and built up a 13 point lead but Akron cut it back to five again. Eventually ND held them without a field goal for some six minutes and put the game away. It's a very nice start to the Tournament, but I expect a much tougher test awaits on Sunday.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (3)

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Notre Dame Coach Mike Brey: It took us a long time to kind of calm down. I'm glad the halftime was 20 minutes because we needed all of it just to kind of ratchet our blood pressure down a little bit. We were better in the second half because our tempo was better.

(on Big East Player of the Year Ben Hansbrough)
Notre Dame Coach Mike Brey: I thought he forced plays at times in the first half. In the second half, his decision making was excellent, and it helped us flow.

Notre Dame Coach Mike Brey: I think with (Tim) Abromaitis, he is a pretty steady guy. You just let him play. Those were two big shots he hit. We needed key buckets there.

    • Akron Center Zeke Marshall: I had four 2-foot layups I missed in the early part of the game. I don't really recall that it was their defense that caused me to miss. It was just me missing.

    • Akron Coach Keith Dambrot: We fought back. We just couldn't put enough baskets together on a continuous basis to win. That's what a mid-major has to do to beat a high major with a seed that high is you have to shoot the ball better than that, really. We felt like we got good shots even from the outside that just didn't go in for us tonight. We thought we could score on them, but we just didn't. I thought it was going to be a bigger challenge to guard them, and we actually did a decent job.
