TRIVIA: In this episode Tony says "I have a better chance of hooking up with Jessica Alba than these guys do of infiltrating sealift." Which is ironic because Michael Wetherly was at one point engaged to Jessica Alba, when they were co-stars on Dark Angel, but they broke it off. Their characters on Dark Angel were also involved.
TRIVIA: The whole season we have been shown flashbacks alluding to Gibbs' life prior to becoming a field agent for NCIS. On episode 3x07, "Honor Code," while Zach is under Gibbs' protection Gibbs shows Zach his boat in his basement. We are introduced through the first of many flashbacks to a little girl sanding the very same boat. In this episode we learn that that little girl is indeed Gibbs' child with wife number 1. Wife number 1 is the only wife out of the four that Gibbs does not talk about, and we find out why - she was killed, along with his daughter.
TRIVIA: We learn in this episode that Ziva speaks Turkish.
TRIVIA: In the movie Local Boys Mark Harmon's character met the same fate as Gibbs, i. e. lost his wife and daughter.
TRIVIA: NCIS Special Agent Abog Ghalib might be an allusion to a well known Abu Sayyaf Commander, Ghalib Andang also known as Commander Robot, which became notorious because of the Sipadan Beach Resort Kidnaping in Malaysia last May 3, 2000. Commander Robot died along with 23 other Abu Sayyaf members in a failed jail break attempt last March 5, 2005.
GOOF: According to Dr. Ducky Mallard, the name Pinpin Pula means "rice paddy dike" in tagalog. Abu Sayyaf terrorists usually have Arabic names, not Tagalog names. The word "pula" is a Tagalog word that means RED, and the name Pinpin, sometimes use as a pet name, doesn't mean anything. But there is an Abu Sayyaf commander, Umbra Jumdail, a trained medic, also known as Dr. Abu Pula. The Tagalog translation of "rice paddy dike" is actually "pilapil."
TRIVIA: The Abu Sayyaf Group is classified by the Philippine Military as terrorist group with links to Al Queda. The members of the group call themselves al-Harakatul Islamiya although their group was better known as the Abu Sayyaf, meaning "Father of the Sword." The title was supposed to refer to Abdurajak Abubakar Janjalani, the group's founder and ideologue. The name later stuck and was translated by journalists and the military to mean "Bearer of the Sword."
GOOF: At the beginning of the episode, while Tony is watching a man smoking, the smoke gets into the man's face. This is because the footage of the man smoking was running in reverse.
Captain Todd Gelfand: How well do you know Gibbs? Director Sheppard: He was my mentor at NCIS. He taught me most of what I know. Captain Todd Gelfand: Yet you're his boss. Director Sheppard: Jethro's a great field agent, a great team leader, and he deals more efficiently with difficult politicians than I do. Captain Todd Gelfand: Then why isn't he the... Director Sheppard: He shoots them.
Abby: What if those were Gibbs' guts smooshed all over that room? Ziva: Oh, for god's sake, Abby, they're not. Abby: I said, what if they were?! Ziva: The colour would be more coffee brown than red.
Tony (To McGee about Ziva as a bellydancer): From Russia With Love.
(when the head nurse refuses her access to see Gibbs) Nurse: Shooting your way in? Jenny: Don't be silly. I don't have my weapon.
Abby: What are you telling me? McGee: What do you mean? Abby: You have that three-little-pigs-look. McGee: What? Abby: The three little pigs. They were afraid to open the door because the big bad wolf was outside. McGee: I don't know what are you talking about. (Something rings...) Abby: Wow... this is definitely going on my wall. (Ziva walks in.) Ziva: I should be a professional photographer! Abby: The Director hasn't called. Ziva: About? Abby: About?! Gibbs! Ziva: Oh... Abby: She didn't call you, did she? Ziva: No. Abby: Because, you know, the way you're acting, you might have just, I don't know, forgotten to tell. McGee: Ziva, do you notice anything different in here? Ziva: No music. McGee: That's it! No music. (He looks at Abby.) You know, you usually play music in here...
Ducky: (to Tony) You sound like Gibbs.
Abby: Positive thoughts, positive thoughts, positive thoughts!
Tony: Abby! Front and center. You too, Ziva. Let's go! I know what happened. (Abby and Ziva start talking at the same time) Hey! If there's going to be any bitch slapping on this team, I'll do it. Clear? Good. Now shake hands. Shake. (Abby and Ziva reluctantly shake hands) There we go. That wasn't so tough. Was it? Now how about a little hug? Big buddy hug. Come on. (They hug) Now a deep tongue kiss. (Both women hit Tony) Now we feel better.
Tony: Shouldn't he be awake by now?
Jenny: You know Gibbs. He keeps his own schedule. Do you know what REM is?
Tony: Sure. Rapid Eye Movement. It happens when you're asleep and dreaming.
Jenny: That's what it looks like he's doing now.
Tony: Oh well, that's gotta be a good sign, right?
Jenny: If it isn't a nightmare.
Tony: Coffee...
Jenny: What?
Tony: Coffee, it's a sure-fire way to wake Gibbs up.
Jenny: Good idea. But he's intubated so we'll have to use the I.V.
Tony: Don't like the sight of blood, McGee? Too bad. (lowers hand, showing bloody nose)
(Tony is talking about a movie) Ziva: I'm confused. McGee: So am I, and I saw the DVD twice. Tony: Sound of Music confuses you, Probie. Ziva: I love that movie! (Starts to sing a song from the movie) Tony: (Clamps hand over Ziva's mouth) One note, and I will lock you in a room and make you listen to "It's A Small World" for 24 hours straight! Do we understand each other?! Ziva (fearful): Mmm-hmm.
Palmer: Who would sit on an explosive? Ducky: Someone who didn't know they were sitting on the explosive. Palmer: Of course. Ducky: Did it myself once. No twice. First time I was young, second time foolish. Palmer: Why were you sitting on an explosive, Doctor? Ducky: I just told you... I was young and foolish. Haven't you been listening?
Director Shepard: DiNozzo, does he look in pain? Tony: Well, I don't know. I've never seen Gibbs show pain, Director.
Tony: Can you see Ziva as a belly dancer?
McGee: Abby slapped Ziva and Ziva slapped Abby! Tony: Damn! I missed it?
Ziva: Ducky, drip it! Ducky: You mean drop it or zip it? Ziva: American idioms drive me up the hall! Ducky: Well, actually... never mind.
Abby: What's the matter? Never heard a girl fart before? McGee: Guys! That was the hippo! Abby: Are you sure, McGee? McGee: Yes, because yours are more...feminine...
Ziva: Tony, your dying words are going to be, I've seen this film.
Aloma Wright, who plays Nurse Ethel Washingtown in this episode, also played a similar mannered nurse in NBC's comedy series Scrubs and in various other TV shows and movies.

In the beginning, Tony is comparing the object of their stake-out, a Turkish ship, to The Usual Suspects, a 1995 movie staring Stephen Baldwin, Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Spacey, Kevin Pollack and Benicio Del Toro. The Usual Suspects is an elegant and complicated whodunit centering around a mysterious Turkish villain named Keyser Soze and five other criminals, who may or may not have been involved in the burning of a ship and a murder at a dock in San Pedro, California. There is a little foreshadowing in Tony's remark, as the ship they are watching suddenly burst into flames.
Tony makes several references to From Russia With Love, a 1963 James Bond movie starring Sean Connery and Daniela Bianchi.
When Abby says to McGee that he has a three-little-pigs-look she is talking about story The Three Little Pigs. Abby said that they were afraid to open the door because the bad wolf was outside.
Tony: The Sound of Music confuses you Probie. The Sound of Music is a Broadway musical and film based on the book The Von Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp. It contains many hit songs, including "My Favorite Things," "Climb Every Mountain" and "Sixteen Going On Seventeen" as well as the title song. The film version was one of the biggest box office hits in cinema history.
The Port Chicago disaster (as mentioned by Tony) happened on July 17, 1944, in California. There was a munitions explosion which injured and killed hundreds of sailors and civilians. There was a TV movie named Mutiny starring Michael Jai White.
Tony: Very Sergeant Schulz. I KNOW NOTHIN-K! The line, "I see nothink, nothink!" (said exactly as Tony said it) was the catchphrase of the character of Sergeant Hans Schulz, who was played by John Banner. The line originated with the character of Sgt Schulz (no first name) in the program Hogan's Heroes.
