Robert Banks, a psychologist and Navy reservist, was found dead hanging in his home. After some investigation, the team discovers that it is more than just a suicide. They learn that the man was working on a very classified case for the Department of Defense someone was using subterfuge to try and slowly drive him insane.
Gibbs speaks with Dr. Samantha Ryan, the director of PsyOps. He believes she knows more than she is letting on. The team finds Banks' field operator Brian Mitchell, who directs them to the PsyOps lieutenant that was dismissed by Banks months prior.
They link the lieutenant to Banks' death, but they then find out that he was being framed by Mitchell. It turns out that Banks' death was a result of far more personal reasons - Mitchell had an obsession with Banks' teenage daughter so she killed Banks to collect the $4 million life insurance policy.
