This episode has it all. Shinji gets beaten up by a classmate because that classmate's sister was injured by debri when Evangelion Unit-01 was fighting a giant monster called "Angel" during the second episode and a little of the first. Well, not much in the first. Two classmates wanted to get a little too close to the action and ends up coming aboard the robot so Shinji wouldn't have to worry about accidentally hitting them because they would be with him.

This episode had what I needed. There was excitement in every corner! There was action everywhere you looked! New characters were introduced, and this brings in for more room for good character development. This is entertaining for many reasons and could be a little amusing, too. Well, a lot amusing. The classification for this review is correct. Exactly why I watch this series.

I am looking forward to watching more in.. right after I "click Submit" which is next to "Reset". Sumbit.moreless

  • Fairly good.

This episode wasn't the best, but great yet.

So, Shinji is doing routine training, and later starts his first day at school. And I liked how they brought up the "Hedgehog's Dilemma" thing; it really has something to it... poor Shinji.

So, we get to know a bit more about the Second Impact... but that's not the true story we get; it's just the cover-up story made by NERV (or SEELE, I think).

And it was funny when Shinji answered "yes" to a message from a classmate asking whether he was the EVA pilot; everyone rushed over to him. Toji later gives Shinji a beating; because his sister was injured in the previous battle that Shinji fought in, even though Shinji had no control, and therefore it was not his fault.

And, Shinji has to battle the fourth Angel. Kensuke and Toji almost gets crushed in the battle; due to Shinji getting beat down. They are allowed into his entry plug for safety. When power cuts out, Shinji disobeys Misato's order to retreat, and uses his prog knife to defeat the Angel.

    A fair episode. 8/10moreless

  • Interesting notes about this third episode of one of the greatest anime ever created.

Episode Three is set up to be part one of two with Episode Four. This episode depicts Shinji, who tends to be rather introverted, being bewildered by his new surroundings and yet taking the first step towards communicating with others. In Episode Three, New Tokyo-3 No. 1 Middle School that Shinji attends is one of the places where action takes place and his classmates, Toji Suzuhara, Kensuke Aida, and the class representative, Hikari Horaki, appear.

Toji, who consciously behaves like a man, and Kensuke, who has his own world of his hobby concerning all things military and who also knows how to get on in the world very contrasting characters compared to Shinji. The names of these two characters are taken from the main characters in Ryu Murakami's The Fascism of Love and Illusions, which provides no small amount of inspiration for Director Anno.

Many truths are revealed in this episode, such as Unit-01's capabilities and weapons, the defense system of New Tokyo-3, and the truth about the Second Impact. Also, pay att4ention to the morning variety show voce that can be heard from off the screen in the morning scene at the beginning. The story of how a giant meteor strike caused the Second Impact that the old instructor is telling during class is not the whole truth. The following information is brought up in Episode Seven. Also, Misato's dialogue reveals that the Angel that appeared in this episode is the Fourth Angel. This is the second Angel that has appeared during the series. So did the Second Angel appear 15 years ago and the First Angel appear even before that, or what? The mysteries increase.

As opposed to Unit-01's first battle being at night, Unit-01's second battle develops under the blue sky. There are also many memorable images here, such as the cut that has the silhouette view of Unit-01 frozen in place where it had delivered the finishing blow to the Angel, or the special effects movie-like scene compositions, like the cut where the Fourth Angel flies right by a lighthouse and the cut with the birdhouse standing in front of the fallen Unit01.

In this episode, Risuko talks about the "hedgehog's dilemma," which is a psychology tern that originates from Schopenhauer's fable, and it expresses the complications and ambivalence that arise as people seek the psychological distance to maintain between each other. This is where the English episode title "Hedgehog's Dilemma" for Episode Four "Rain, Escape, and Afterwards" comes from. In addition, what Misato says in the same scene allows us to see what her thoughts on communicating are at this time, so that is also very interesting.moreless

  • Not the series best, but definitely up there.

Shinji transferred to a local junior high, hoping he'll find a new life that involves him having friends. Though it was the opposite; when one of the students discovered he was the pilot responsible for the carnage done on Tokyo-3, he beat him up pretty bad. The fourth angel was making its move on Tokyo-3, and Shinji did battle with it. However, he spotted the two people who bullied him earlier, and decided to take them in inside of his Evangelion. With his internal battery running low, he attempted a head on attack using his progressive knife, which had worked. The two people who were with Shinji within the cockpit had a change of heart towards Shinji, as they saw with their own eyes how emotionally scarred he was from piloting this machine. I can't really say this is one of my favourite episodes, as it simply develops Shinji's feelings of being alone, incorporated with bullying. Though I guess I could say I felt what Shinji was feeling after he defeated the angel, and simply stood there and cried. Again, another episode with a dark atmosphere.moreless

    • The Fourth Angel Shamshel The Fourth Angel bears the name of "Shamshel," the angel of daytime. Its appearance calls to mind an insect, and it is composed of two parts, the disc-shaped head and the abdominal area stretching behind it. A pair of arms stretches out to either side and eight segmented legs can also be seen on its abdominal area. The most distinctive characteristic of this Angel is that it has the ability to metamorphose according to its target and situation. It has its aerial mode, where it folds its arms in and aligns its head and abdominal area in a straight line. From that mode, it goes into semi-combat mode, where its arms are extended. And then there is the combat mode where it raises its body perpendicular to the ground and tilts its head down at ninety degrees to the front. It has the ability to fly, but it is fundamentally low speed, low altitude fight. Additionally, the patterns on its head are not eyes but appear to be imitation. Considering how it accurately attacks Unit-01, which is directly below it. It is hard to think that they are optic organs. In its semi-combat and combat modes, a whip-like part extends from the tips of its arms, which it uses to attack. These whip-like parts have the power to pierce Unit-01's abdominal region as well as grabbing its leg and throwing it. In the second battle, it is defeated, but it retains its original shape and is ultimately seized by NERV as research material. More information. Edit
