this is one of the best episodes of neon genesis evangelion. the best music in any anime show every. a best friend must die a pianful death.

those who are squirmish are have emotions best not be watching this episode. it's that dramatic of a impact that you need for this episode.

the animation. first can I say that. the attactk of the 13 angel is really cool. not only that but the way the eva moves is very freakky for some reason. anyways the action is a slautherinfested bloody gorey to the maximum. the only way shinji can defeat the angel is by dummy control but shinji dont want his dad to use that cause he knows a humans in there. the 3 eva grabs shinj'es neck and strangels him until...... gendou pulls the dummy plug and the atifical being inside eva 1 comes to life. and takes control by grabing and punching the eva3 in the face and , busting it's head open blood flys every where. shinji screams and cry's for the pilot. the eva 1 continues to rip apart the chest of eva3 and and yanks the capsule out and crushes it.

back at base shinji finds out that the pilot is........................................................................................................................dont read if you dont want to know.....................................................................................................................

  • They had a TV-MA rating for a reason; squeamish people, please leave the room...

This is one of my favorite episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion, but if you're squeamish, change the channel.

The epsiode starts with the question, "Who's the 4th Child?" and the question isn't answered until the end of the episode.

The battle between Eva-unit-04 and Shinji, Rei, and Asuka kept me on the edge--it was suspensful, Eva02's arm was cut off; Asuka was K.O.ed and finally, the last hope, Shinji is reluctant to fight the adversary because he knows that inside, there's a "kid like him". Rejecting his son's opinion, Gendo activates the dummy plug and annihilates the possessed Eva. Blood was splattered all over the buildings, but the most suspensful part was when Shinji smashed the injection pod holding the pilot. Between all of the violence and screams, my hands went numb while watching it, that's how suspensful it was.moreless
  • Eva unit 03 is put into Japan, and becomes possessed by the angel Beliel. This puts the pilot into danger, and nerve writes him off as a loss. Shinji is forced to go against his morals to fight the Eva turned angel, at the risk of another eva pilot.moreless

This seems to actually be one of the more emotional episode, just because of the sheer savagery that is shown by the Eva when in dummy mode, and even more by the fact that Shinji screams the whole time. The fact that raw pain and tears is shown in this episode puts it into the top of the ranking, because it really taps into the emotion of every human being in one way or another.moreless
  • I totally dig this episode, except that I was a little dissappointed that they didn\'t follow the magna series. In the Magna series Touji DIES...

I totally dig this episode, except that I was a little dissappointed that they didn\'t follow the magna series. In the Magna series Touji DIES... yup that is correct he freakin\' DIES. He didn\'t get hurt really really badly, he DIES. Honestly I cried in this episode when he was begging his father to stop. If I was shenji I would have probably said \"That\'s not cool daddy\" or probably \"If you don\'t stop I\'ll switch teams and date Billy\". If he would have said that his dad would have gone into shock and probably died. That\'s just my opinion.moreless
  • Predictable, but still delivers an awesome package.

    9.1
Upon its arrival, EVA unit 04 was quickly infected by the 13th Angel and started going on a rampage. The Evangelion team was sent in to stop it, but it was much too strong for even the mighty Asuka and emotionless Rei. Which leaves Shinji to fight him all by himself. Though knowing that a human is in there right now, he hesitates to attack, and builds up to the point where he'd rather die before killing another. However, dissappointed with his son's attitude, he injects the Dummy plug within unit 01 so the EVA can be controlled without emotional restraints. Shinji was left with nothing to do but watch as the giant is being thrashed, along with the poor soul contained within. It was even more heart breaking to find out that the fourth child was Touji.

Really, I felt what Shinji was going through when he stood there laying still, thinking of what should be done or what shouldn't. I was also quite furious when Gendou decided to plug in the artifical dummy. I mean, how horrifying would it be to find that something you pilot is beating up another human being so mercilessly? A major shocker was when EVA 01 even crushed the capsule the pilot is within, and Shinji had no choice but to cry in pity for that soul. To wrap things up and make you go insane, the person you nearly killed was a close friend.moreless

    • Japanese Title: 「命の選択を」- ("Inochi no Sentaku o") - "The Judgement of Life"

    • The probable reason why the Angel is Bardiel, Angel of Hail, is the fact that Bardiel (probably) infected Unit 03 when the transport bringing the EVA went through the cumulonimbus cloud. Cumulonimbus clouds (or thunder clouds) are the only type of cloud that allows the development of hail, hence the name.

    • In the manga comic, Shinji finds out that Hikari likes Toji, but poor Toji actually dies in the fight with EVA-01. In the anime series, Toji doesn't die but he is severely wounded and is unable to attend school for an indefinate period of time.

    • The 13th Angel is called Bardiel, Angel of Hail. It effectively took over Unit-03, and mutated it into its Angel form. More information.
