Although this sticks pretty well to the book, this episode annoys me most of the time. I'm sure the director thought it was funky, slick and modern but the way this episode was shot is just irritatingly distracting. The sets (apart from the brownstone house and office) are surreal and the shots are quick cuts from person to things to other people all at odd angles with strange lighting and music. Yes, very modern and eye catching but it doesn't help tell a crime story! In fact the jump cuts detract from the tale, which is told as a bit of a farce. Even the final five minutes - obviously just filling in time - is nail-bitingly painful to watch, especially as Wolfe is almost gleeful. Anyone who knows the characters would know that Wolfe is so restrained he barely shows any emotion apart from anger, so a gleeful Wolfe like this is just wrong.

The more sane, normal, parts with good WOlfe and Archie interplay almost make up for the doo-hah of the rest of it. If only the rest had been done sane and normal as well. What were they thinking? A case of the style ruining the substance.moreless
