The Houston SPCA is a private, nonprofit charity which receives no funding from the government, United Way, or any national animal groups. The HSPCA receives over 40,000 animals each year — an average of more than 100 animals per day. The majority are lost, homeless, or simply unwanted. While many people think that the Houston SPCA shelters only dogs and cats, in reality, small mammals like guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, ferrets and rabbits, as well as horses, cows, goats, pigs and other livestock-type animals also find care and shelter at the Houston SPCA. The mission of the HSPCA is to promote respect for all animals and free them from suffering and abuse. As an open-door animal shelter, the Houston SPCA accepts all animals in need. Animal Precinct, narrated by Michael Madsen, chronicles the drama, emotion, triumph and tragedy of the work of the agents of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal's (ASPCA) Humane Law Enforcement Department (HLE), the only law enforcement group in New York City solely devoted to investigating crimes against New York's animal population. The Michigan Humane Society is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to serving animals since 1877 and receives no local, state or federal government funding. The MHS serves more than 48,000 animals each year and some of their programs include: animal adoptions, animal behavior and training, animal care and protection, charitable animal hospitals, cruelty investigation, education, legislation, lost and found pets, pet visitation, rescue of injured animals, sterilization and wildlife care and shelter. Field officers are dispatched to over 4,000 distress calls each year, rescuing more than 6,000 animals. Common complaints received include reports of animals with no food, water or shelter.
