Welcome to The Inspector Alleyn Mysteries guide at TV.com. This detective drama was based on the novels by Ngaio Marsh, a contemporary of Agatha Christie's. Her detective, Chief Inspector Roderick Alleyn, was an Old Etonian at Scotland Yard from the 1930s onwards. In the pilot, Simon Williams played Alleyn, but he wasn't available in 1993, so Patrick Malahide took over the role. After the first series the BBC ordered three more episodes, all broadcast as specials during 1994.moreless

Welcome to the Poldark guide at TV.com. This old British show from the 1970s is a period piece based on Winston Graham's historical novels of 18th century Cornwall. Our hero is an unusual English gentleman called Captain Ross Poldark, who comes home from the War of American Independence to find his sweetheart Elizabeth about to marry his cousin Francis Poldark. Ross sinks into a deep depression. Short of money, he tries mining and other enterprises to make his fortune, nearly always having to fight the upstart George Warleggan - an old enemy who also has designs on Elizabeth. But the big love story of the series is unexpected. While Ross is pining for Elizabeth, he rescues an urchin called Demelza from her dreadful family, and she falls in love with him. Ross only slowly comes to see Demelza as a possible mate. The drama is all played out amid the dramatic scenery of the Cornish coast-line, where smugglers, ship-wreckers, tin-miners and swindlers of various kinds ply their trades. All twenty-nine episodes are now available on DVD.moreless

    BBC (ended 2000)
Home Farm Twins follows the adventures of twins Helen & Hannah around the local countryside in this series dramatized by Elly Brewer from the Home Farm books by Jenny Oldfield.

The first Season started with the Moore family moving from the big city "London" to the country village of "Doveton". Hannah (Polly Duniam) is a dreamer and an idealist - much more 'girly' than her tomboy sister Helen (Sophie Duniam), who is more outspoken, daring and sarcastic. The girls quickly got to know the locals and began a long-term friendship with Sam (Ben Evans) from Crackpot Farm who teased them for being 'townies' but still loved to join in their adventures but Sam had dreams elsewhere and dropped a bombshell on the twins during Season 3 by announcing he was to leave Doveton. The twins' mum, Mary (Jacquetta May) is famous for making cakes at the Curlew Cafe which is the business she started up after moving to Doveton, while her husband David (Martin Ball) is a wildlife photographer and studies animals. The twins parents also gave birth to a baby girl during Season 3 and the girls eventually learned that animals were no longer the only species who needed looking after and promptly watched their baby sister on numerous occasions getting into big trouble for regular accidents involving their methods. The final Season broadcast on the BBC ended with the twins facing the realities of growing up and looking back at their time spent living on Home Farm and wondering what life had in store for them next...moreless

A Horseman Riding By is a 13-part BBC drama series that was first broadcast in 1978. The series was based on two of the three books in R F Delderfield's A Horseman Riding By trilogy and starred Nigel Havers as Paul Craddock, a young man who was invalided out of the Boer war and invited to become squire of the long neglected Shallowford estate in Devon. Paul has to use all his charm and guile to convince the old families of the valley that he is capable of doing the job. Fortunately he is assisted by estate keeper John Rudd (Glyn Houston) who knows their ways. After a disastrous marriage to flighty Grace Lovell (Fiona Gaunt) Paul eventually marries Claire Derwent (Prunella Ransome). They make a great couple and face the challenges that beset the valley together. The biggest challenge of all is the Great War, which sees the valley lose many of its inhabitants and Paul back in service. The series was well received on its first broadcast and gave Nigel Havers one of his first starring roles. There is also an early role for Pam St. Clement as Meg Potter, who is now better known for her many years as Pat Evans/Butcher in the BBC's Eastenders. The series was dramatised by Alexander Baron, Arden Winch, and John Wiles (who was the producer of Doctor Who way back in 1966), directed by Philip Dudley, Paul Ciappessoni, and Alan Grint, and produced by Ken Riddington.moreless
