Out of the Blue (UK) was a hard-hitting BBC police drama set and filmed in Sheffield. It was described by series script editor, Claire Elliot as "contemporary, gritty, urban reality". Shot on film, its tight script, fast-paced direction and strong cast made for powerful and compulsive viewing. Out of the Blue follows a team of detectives at Brazen Gate CID through grisly murder cases, clashes with an already-divided community and through the dramas of their personal lives. Ambitious DS Frankie Drinkall's life is turned upside down when he is diagnosed with epilepsy. His refusal to accept his condition leads him into a downward spiral and ultimately to his demise. DS Rebecca Bennett gives the series an ever-present emotional charge as she finds herself the subject of both PC Alex Holder's and DC Warren Allen's affections – and there are some classic comedy moments as the impetuous DC Marty Brazil. The second season sees the arrival of troubled DS Jim Llewyn, who seems to be working to his own agenda.moreless

A hilarious show about impressions from the world of Scottish football, broadcast every new year's eve at 11.15pm, part of BBC 1 Scotland's run up to the New Year bells. I am not entirely sure of the year this was first broadcast (I think it was before my estimation) and I think it used to be on reguarly. It now appears as a 5 minute filler entitled "Only A Wee Excuse?" during the season of football, on Tam Cowan's "Offside," a comedy talk show, broadcast on BBC Scotland (normally on a Monday Night at around 10.30pm although this may vary) but it still has its half hour run out on Hogmanay.moreless

    BBC (ended 2000)
Hope and Glory is a BBC drama set in a 'failing' inner London school, seen though the eyes of the headmaster. The head is Ian St.George, played by Lenny Henry who is a trouble-shooting teacher. He is young yet dynamic and turns down a well-paid, influential government position to save Hope Park Comprehensive School. He realises that the children there needed help far more than he needed a comfortable job. After much soul-searching, he decided the children require him more than the government. This drama series is set in an economically depressed area. The only school, Hope Park Comprehensive is close to closure, due to its poor standards. Hope and Glory also stars Amanda Redman as Debbie Bryan, Clive Russel as Phil Jakes and Lee Warburton as Tony Elliott. The main school in an economically depressed area, Hope Park Comprehensive has been on the verge of closing for years. Things begin to look up when dynamic young Ian George replaces the weary headmaster Neil Bruce (Peter Davison). The plot is strong and very well written, adapted from the story written by Lucy Gannon. It allows the audience to empathise with the needs of the children and staff alike. It draws you in, placing you in the situation, wanting to beat the system and thus the local education authority. The situations the school finds itself in are realistic and the sympathetic acting works well. Lenny Henry stars in this BBC drama series as a successful school headmaster who turns down a lucrative ministerial job to help turn around a failing inner-city grammar school. Peter Davison appears in the first episode as the outgoing head. He delivers an excellent performance when he completely loses it during a farewell party and ends up screaming at all the jeering students and telling them exactly how worthless each of them are. Phil Jakes and Debbie Bryan are staff teachers who have to be convinced that Ian George's rash decisions will work, as he tries to stave off an inevitable heart attack. Ian is not liked by every member of the teaching staff, but can he win the confidence of his deputy head Phil Jakes and deal with the incompetent geography teacher Jan Woolley (Pippa Guard) thus preventing Hope Park from closing? Only time will tell! It is a drama, which touches the heart. The audience is drawn to watching. Ian immediately wins over the head of the board of governors, Dennis Hill (Philip Whitchurch) and new teacher Debbie Bryan. It is unlike any other drama on the television at present as it is not medical or police orientated, it is related to education. The target audience for this drama has links with either a parent, grandparent or even as the pupil. It is like being at school again, but you are now allowed in the staff room. Well done BBC, I hope you can produce another series following the dramatic close to the series. I particularly like Hope and Glory, because it shows teachers getting an adrenaline rush from being in the profession. Hope and Glory reinforced this with story lines like a young English teacher inspiring a set of difficult pupils. The school in the drama is clearly a difficult one, yet the audience is also privilege to the funny side of the teaching profession. I must admit I have watched the re-runs on UK Gold and loved them just as much. Please watch it next time it is on as I think you will love it. Teaching is a profession that requires dedication. Hope and Glory shows both the good and bad parts of the profession in a light-hearted fashion. Many criticise it as making a mockery of teaching. Yes there are grave errors but at the end of the day, it is design for the television audience and the humdrum life of a teacher does not boast the viewing figures! The television series Hope and Glory was first screened in 1999-2000. There were a total of sixteen episodes made with a runtime of 60 minutes.moreless
