These are the words that inspired many young Americans to volunteer for service during the First World War. The sinking of this great British oceangoing liner provoked outrage around the world on an unprecedented scale. On May 7, 1915, a German torpedo sent the ship to the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean in just 18 minutes -- its speedy descent into the depths occurring far too fast for most of those aboard to make it to the lifeboats. Of the 1,962 passengers and crew on board, 1,201 were lost, including 94 children and, crucially, 128 Americans, many of whom were prominent figures. President Woodrow Wilson's neutral stance started to crack. All over America there were calls for the United States to take up arms against Germany. In many ways, the Lusitania tragedy was the major turning point of the Great War, and perhaps the single greatest factor that eventually brought America into the war in April 1917.moreless

The loudest bang in modern times was heard more than 3,000 miles away when Indonesia's Krakatoa erupted in 1883. It wasn't the eruption itself that killed 36,000 people, but a series of awesome mega-tsunamis, coupled with extreme fire and heat. Krakatoa: Volcano of Destruction is a dramatized documentary that reconstructs the weeks before, and the struggle for survival during this cataclysmic eruption. Based on diaries of colonial survivors, the story is augmented with state-of-the-art volcano and tsunami science illustrated by CGI and woven seamlessly into the story.moreless

Great Generals from Discovery Channel examines the greatest military leaders who have shaped our history. The program takes an in-depth look at their battles, brilliant strategies, and historic victories. From the winter of 1777 at Valley Forge when George Washington turned the tide for America's revolutionary forces to the Battle of the Bulge, great generals have played a critical role in shaping the world today. Even those who seemed to have little hope achieved victory. Napoleon Bonaparte, the Emperor of France, lived in exile surrounded by British warships. Only through the loyalty of his inner circle was he able to escape and land on French soil. Episodes also include profiles of General MacArthur, who played a prominent role in the Pacific theater in World War II, and General Pershing, who led the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. Travel through history and learn why these men truly were great leaders.moreless
