The show originally premiered on MTV2 in May 2003, following the cancellation of MTV's previous alternative music video show, 120 Minutes. The scope and style of Subterranean is much similar to 120 Minutes, as it features a variety of alternative music artists popular in music today, as well as those popular in the '80s, '90s, and early '00s. The host, Jim Shearer, invites a special guest each week to the show, conducting interviews with the artists while featuring their new videos and new releases. The spirit of 120 Minutes is carried on through Subterranean, by featuring the latest and greatest alternative music artists while maintaining its status as a reliable source of up-and-coming music in the alternative genre. As of March 2007, MTV2 is airing Subterranean without a host or special guests, making the current format simply a video playlist.moreless

MTV2 Legit is the MTV2 series which brings back some cult classics from MTV's history. MTV's programming in the 90's had some short-lived shows which became fan favorites. Some of them like Beavis & Butthead and The State even launched nation-wide petitions to bring them back, and huge sales on DVD. The shows launched the careers of some top entertainers, as well as inspiring series that we love today, with shows and movies like King of The Hill, Office Space and Role Models carrying the torches lit by MTV. Now MTV is giving in to the demand, and bringing the classics back on MTV2 Legit. The series shows groundbreaking talents and moments from 1990's MTV shows, from Beavis & Butthead, Celebrity Deathmatch, The State, and Liquid Television. Liquid Television was home to The Maxx and Aeon Flux, two animated series who led the way for avant garde animation and the anime craze. The State, Beavis & Butthead, and Celebrity Deathmatch were progressive in their blunt approaches, absurd humor, and sometimes taboo subject material. Join MTV as they open up the vaults for moments from these classic shows in MTV2 Legit.moreless
