    Southland

    Southland

    Follow
    NBC (ended 2013)
Southland has redefined the police drama genre with its raw, authentic look at the lives and work of Los Angeles detectives and beat cops. Shot on location in the streets and neighborhoods of Los Angeles, the series captures a realistic, natural environment where similar situations can and often do occur in real life. Created by Ann Biderman, executive producers are John Wells and Christopher Chulack. Southland is produced by John Wells Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Southland was a short midseason replacement series used by NBC to plug the hole at Thursday 10:00 pm left by the end of ER. While its viewership never matched ER’s heyday, the numbers were strong enough to give it a nod for a second 13-episode season that was announced by the network on May 1, 2009, three weeks before the end of the first season. Unfortunately, the show’s fortunes changed over the summer. The transition of the Tonight Show to Conan O’Brien’s hands left Jay Leno as a free agent. NBC President and CEO Jeff Zucker, determined not to lose Leno to a competing network, gave Leno a nightly variety show that would air Monday through Friday at 10:00 pm. This displaced a number of heavy-duty dramas like Law & Order: SVU and Southland which would be moved to 9:00 pm slots – before television’s safe harbor. On August 25, 2009, NBC announced they were pushing back the season two premiere from September 25, 2009, to October 23, 2009 (a Friday at 9:00 pm berth). NBC claimed the move was for the good of the show, taking it out of direct competition with the season premieres of Medium – newly moved to Fridays – and Dollhouse. On October 8, 2009, though, NBC cancelled the show. Press reports at the time said the network felt the show was too "dark and gritty." The decision also left the network with six filmed-but-unaired episodes of season two.

John Wells and WB Television determined not to give up on the show. After NBC reduced its fees for the unaired episodes, they were free to shop it to other networks. TNT was rumored as the interested network by the end of October 2009, and on November 2, 2009, TNT made it official with a press release. It purchased the rights to the six-episode second season and the previously aired first season for a run in early 2010. A decision on a third season funded by TNT would be ratings dependent. TNT ultimately renewed Southland for three more seasons because of a very loyal fan base and critical acclaim. It announced the show's cancellation on May 10, 2013, three weeks after the fifth season finale.

Seasons one through three of Southland starred Arija Bareikis as Officer Chickie Brown, Michael Cudlitz as Officer John Cooper, Jenny Gago as Det. Josie Ochoa, Shawn Hatosy as Det. Sammy Bryant, Regina King as Det. Lydia Adams, Michael McGrady as Det. Daniel "Sal" Salinger, Ben McKenzie as Officer Ben Sherman, and Tom Everett Scott as Det. Russell Clarke. Season four starred Michael Cudlitz as Officer John Cooper, Shawn Hatosy as Officer Sammy Bryant, Regina King as Det. Lydia Adams, and Ben McKenzie as Officer Ben Sherman, reflecting a reduced budget. In season five, C. Thomas Howell as Officer Billy "Dewey" Dudek was promoted to regular from recurring cast.

The Pretender is the story of Jarod, a boy-genius taken from his family as a child. Jarod possesses the ability to quickly learn and impersonate different jobs and occupations. His abductors, a facility simply known as The Centre, tested his abilities through various simulations. But after years of these performances, Jarod becomes wise to the fact that these simulations aren't being used to help people. The Centre sells the sims to the highest bidder to do with as they please, whether it is for good or evil purposes. Knowing this, he breaks free from his captors. Now, as an adult, Jarod sets out to find his family. Along the way, he befriends many people, righting any wrong by using his abilities to become anyone he wants to be. But the Centre has a lot invested in Jarod, and they won't give him up easily. They recruit Sydney, his father-figure and trainer all through his time growing up in The Centre. Sydney is the only man who is close to Jarod, he knows how he thinks. Also in pursuit is Miss Parker, Jarod's childhood friend whose father runs The Centre. Both are aided by Broots, a nervous computer whiz who goes above and beyond the call of duty (whether he wants to or not). The Pretender ran for four years on NBC. TNT co-produced two Pretender movies with Twentieth Century Fox TV. The Pretender 2001 premiered on TNT Monday, January 22, 2001 at 8PM. The second movie, The Pretender: Island of the Haunted, premiered on TNT Monday, December 10, 2001 at 8PM ET. Seasons 1-4 and both TV movies are currently available on DVD.moreless

Ever wonder what life would be like if a new form of sea life began to appear in locales all over the earth? "Surface" is an expansive drama and undersea adventure that centers on the appearance of mysterious sea creatures in the deep ocean -- and tracks the lives of four characters. They are: Laura Daughtery (Lake Bell, "Boston Legal"), the young oceanographer who discovers the secret; Dr. Aleksander Cirko (Rade Sherbedgia, "Snatch"), the government scientist who tries to keep things under wraps; Rich Connelly (Jay R. Ferguson, "Judging Amy"), the Louisiana insurance salesman who loses his brother in a suspicious diving accident; and Miles Barnett (Carter Jenkins, "CSI: New York"), the young boy who brings one of the creatures ashore. The mystery ensnares a spectrum of people, including naval officers in the South Antarctic Sea, a family in North Carolina, scientists from the Oceanographic Institute in Monterey, and fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico. The seemingly innocent creatures they find are beautiful, and kids may even want to play with them -- but is there something more to them? One thing's for sure – they're full of surprises as viewers embark on this journey to discover what might be lurking in the sea. "'Surface' is entertainment for all ages in the tradition of 'E.T.' and 'Close Encounters,'" said Josh and Jonas Pate, the series' creators and executive producers. "It will have action, suspense, thrills and heart as we track the fantastic into the familiar." The Pates continued: "We'll follow the teenager as he raises the sea monster in a suburban garage. We'll admire the young dedicated oceanographer as she takes unbelievable risks to get to the bottom of the mystery. We'll feel the grief and obsession of the every-man from Louisiana, and answer the questions surrounding the mysterious Dr. Cirko. This series will plumb the depths of suspense." "Something is down there." "Surface" is from NBC Universal Television Studio and was created by Josh and Jonas Pate ("Dragnet"), who also serve as executive producers. NOTE: The original title of the series was Fathom but was changed after it came to light that the rights to the name were owned by another company.moreless

Something's going on and someone's behind it and we're going get to the bottom of it." Principal Durst: "There is nothing wrong at Blake Holsey High" -Opening narration for the third season Black Hole High -Contributor: Gordo_Fan Characters: Josie P. Trent - "New kid at school -- Doesn't like rules": Blake Holsey High is Josie's latest stop on her long trail of boarding schools, followed by an ultra-sized permanent record. Estranged from her mother, Josie is outspoken and expressive. She is also described as smart, gutsy, and disliking everything phony. She isn't afraid of rule breaking (she is a notorious class skipper) and is most likely involved when there's trouble, especially because it is a habit of hers to investigate the odd occurrences of the school. Josie hates cats and public speaking, and is not good at singing. She lives with Corrine in room 21. She was kicked out of her last school for turning some of the students's skin green. Corrine Baxter - "Straight "A" student": An attendant of Blake Holsey High for two years now. Conforms to all rules and is highly organized, intelligent, and careful. She has an IQ of 172 and has sang in a choir. Her mom is a psychiatrist and her dad is a brain surgeon. Roommate is Josie in room 21. Vaughn Jody Pearson - "Most popular boy in school -- Has dark secret": One of the most unlikely students to join the Science Club or even be associated with science. His father is Victor Pearson. Vaughn is often placed in uncomfortable positions to find out information discussed by the science club and comes into conflict with morals. He is left handed, has dyslexia, and is on the football and wrestling teams. In room 36, he is not assigned a roommate. His birthday is June 17. Marshall Wheeler - "Young, gifted, geek": Very intelligent. Dedicated to getting things, aims towards amusement, and tends to think about ways of making money. He apparently dressed up as Principal Durst for Halloween and made a genetically engineered soap that turned his skin green. Has an older brother named Grant who also attended Blake Holsey. He is the lead singer and keyboard player for "Magnet 360", a band of Blake Holsey. Roommate is Lucas in room 32. Lucas Randall - "Suspicious of everybody": He is not good at sports and isn't the preferred choice to be on a team with. Often picked on by bullies and isn't good at insults. He is known for looking into conspiracies and his stories are often not believed. Lucas likes fishing with his father and playing chess. Lucas also has asthma. Roommate is Marshall in room 32. Principal Amanda Durst - Once a new teacher at Blake Holsey High, she has now been principal of the school for the last 10 years. She attempts to keep the hopes of the students high but has a watchful eye on the science club. She loves Romeo and Juliet. Professor Noel Zachary - Science teacher and head of the Science Club, we find out though that this was not always his passion. It was luck that he received a scholarship from Pearadyne Labs to continue to college. He also was employed by Pearadyne Labs for a short time. Like Josie, he is interested (and often fascinated) in the odd occurrences and seeks to find the cause of them. He does not like giving pop quizzes. His favorite kinds of foods are hotdogs and spaghetti bolonges. He has a dog. Professor Zachary's birthday is on the 25th but the month is unknown. His last job was at an all girl school. The Janitor - When even Professor Zachary doesn't have the answers needed to solve their problems, the janitor turns up to individually give the students perplexing advice. He claims to like reading and his living area is usually not lit. Appears unsurprised at the mysterious events and seems to be watchful of Pearadyne Labs. He is usually seen attending to anything leftover by the suspicious occurrences. Victor Pearson - "Vaughn's father -- Major league bad guy": Having a fascination with science from a young age, Victor Pearson is the wealthy owner of Pearadyne Labs, an institution dedicated to science. An accident occurred 15 years ago causing mysterious happenings around the affected lands and the loss of his wife. He is head of the board of directors/governors for Blake Holsey High. He is suspicious of the Science Club and especially Josie. Victor's mission has been the reopening of Pearadyne Labs. Kelly Trent - Josie's mother. She worries that Josie may not like her and is trying to be more close to Josie. According to her, the work she does involves research for private companies and is an occupation involving confidentiality. She also worked at Pearadyne, apparently one of the people who began it.
