The 60's is a made-for-TV miniseries developed by NBC that moves through the 1960s decade of social and political upheavals as it focuses on two distinct families, the Herlihys and the Taylors. The Herlihy family is a middle class family in Chicago whose hopes were for football scholarships, potential jobs, and marriages for their three children are thrown aside by the diverging paths. Their youngest, the shining Katie (Julia Stiles), becomes pregnant and leaves her family in the aftermath to follow the rock musician father (Donovan Leitch) to San Francisco in the psychedelic, flower-power upsurge in the West coast. Her oldest brother athletic Brian (Jerry O'Connell) joins the Marines when his scholarship to Notre Dame falls through and ends up becoming one of the scarred ghosts of veterans from the Vietnam War. Their intelligent brother Michael (Josh Hamilton) takes the peace rally approach, ultimately protesting and campaigning with politicians of the era's Democrats. The Taylors were a prominent and civil rights oriented family in the deep South but when the minister father was shot and killed, Emmet (Leonard Roberts) takes the opposite path of peaceful protests and joins the Black Panther group, often clashing violently with the police. The 60's acts as a retelling of all the potential lifestyles and paths anyone could have experienced during that period in American culture with an underscore of popular musical classics and remembrances of the historical events that shaped the nation.moreless

King- The Miniseries is a television miniseries based on the life of civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that aired for three nights in a row on NBC in February of 1978. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (portrayed by Paul Winfield) was a Baptist minister who began working towards the African American civil rights movement early on. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott, and delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech at the March on Washington in 1963. He raised public consciousness of the issues at hand and earned a reputation as a talented orator. In 1964, he was recognized for his contribution to ending discrimination and racial segregation through non-violent means with a Nobel Peace Prize. Beyond African American rights, King was also focused on human rights in general, and made efforts towards ending poverty and the civil rights war. He was assassinated in 1968 at the age of 39. In the miniseries, his wife, Cicely Tyson plays Coretta Scott King, and it also features Roscoe Lee Browne, Tony Bennett, Lonny Chapman, and Ossie Davis among others.moreless
