    NBC (ended 2013)
Southland has redefined the police drama genre with its raw, authentic look at the lives and work of Los Angeles detectives and beat cops. Shot on location in the streets and neighborhoods of Los Angeles, the series captures a realistic, natural environment where similar situations can and often do occur in real life. Created by Ann Biderman, executive producers are John Wells and Christopher Chulack. Southland is produced by John Wells Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Southland was a short midseason replacement series used by NBC to plug the hole at Thursday 10:00 pm left by the end of ER. While its viewership never matched ER’s heyday, the numbers were strong enough to give it a nod for a second 13-episode season that was announced by the network on May 1, 2009, three weeks before the end of the first season. Unfortunately, the show’s fortunes changed over the summer. The transition of the Tonight Show to Conan O’Brien’s hands left Jay Leno as a free agent. NBC President and CEO Jeff Zucker, determined not to lose Leno to a competing network, gave Leno a nightly variety show that would air Monday through Friday at 10:00 pm. This displaced a number of heavy-duty dramas like Law & Order: SVU and Southland which would be moved to 9:00 pm slots – before television’s safe harbor. On August 25, 2009, NBC announced they were pushing back the season two premiere from September 25, 2009, to October 23, 2009 (a Friday at 9:00 pm berth). NBC claimed the move was for the good of the show, taking it out of direct competition with the season premieres of Medium – newly moved to Fridays – and Dollhouse. On October 8, 2009, though, NBC cancelled the show. Press reports at the time said the network felt the show was too "dark and gritty." The decision also left the network with six filmed-but-unaired episodes of season two.

John Wells and WB Television determined not to give up on the show. After NBC reduced its fees for the unaired episodes, they were free to shop it to other networks. TNT was rumored as the interested network by the end of October 2009, and on November 2, 2009, TNT made it official with a press release. It purchased the rights to the six-episode second season and the previously aired first season for a run in early 2010. A decision on a third season funded by TNT would be ratings dependent. TNT ultimately renewed Southland for three more seasons because of a very loyal fan base and critical acclaim. It announced the show's cancellation on May 10, 2013, three weeks after the fifth season finale.

Seasons one through three of Southland starred Arija Bareikis as Officer Chickie Brown, Michael Cudlitz as Officer John Cooper, Jenny Gago as Det. Josie Ochoa, Shawn Hatosy as Det. Sammy Bryant, Regina King as Det. Lydia Adams, Michael McGrady as Det. Daniel "Sal" Salinger, Ben McKenzie as Officer Ben Sherman, and Tom Everett Scott as Det. Russell Clarke. Season four starred Michael Cudlitz as Officer John Cooper, Shawn Hatosy as Officer Sammy Bryant, Regina King as Det. Lydia Adams, and Ben McKenzie as Officer Ben Sherman, reflecting a reduced budget. In season five, C. Thomas Howell as Officer Billy "Dewey" Dudek was promoted to regular from recurring cast.

    Law & Order: Los Angeles

    Law & Order: Los Angeles

    Follow
    NBC (ended 2011)
Law & Order: Los Angeles is a crime procedural that is set in the elite Robbery Homicide Division of the LAPD and the courts of Los Angeles County. The detectives and attorneys work to solve and prosecute cases that cover the L.A. Basin, which involve not only the expected celebrities, but many crimes that do not receive news coverage. At Robbery Homicide Division, Detective Rex Winters (Skeet Ulrich) is an ex-Marine who has a very black-and-white view of the world and went through the Rodney King riot as a rookie police officer. He is married to his former partner, Lori. Detective Tomas "T.J." Jaruszalski, the son of an Oscar-winning cinematographer, thinks being a cop is the most fun anyone can have, like being front row at the circus everyday. The division is commanded by Lieutenant Arleen Gonzales (Rachel Ticotin). The District Attorney's office is represented by Deputy District Attorney Ricardo Morales (Alfred Molina), whose father was a groundskeeper at a local country club and considers this job the first step to greater things. He is a sarcastic realist who has no trouble sacrificing theory for a down-and-dirty fight for justice. Even so, he is still skilled at politics. His assistant, Deputy DA Evelyn Price (Regina Hall), is the product of an upper-middle-class upbringing in Baldwin Hills. Although she acknowledges the problems in the LAPD, she still prefers order over chaos. Morales' counterpart in more ways than one is Deputy District Attorney Jonah "Joe" Dekker (Terrence Howard). Dekker is considered to be a creative legal thinker and does not believe his position as a DDA is a permanent career choice. Dekker's assistant is Deputy DA Lauren Stanton (Megan Boone), whose privileged childhood accounts for her right-of-center politics. The office is overseen by the Los Angeles District Attorney (Peter Coyote). This fourth iteration of the Law & Order franchise is a production of Wolf Films in association with Universal Media Studios.
