Rin Tin Tin was the only dog in Los Angeles to be listed in the telephone directory. Lee Duncan, his owner and trainer, sais, "Rinty was very close to his great grandfather," the original Rin Tin Tin, who appeared in many popular motion pictures of the 1930s and the 1940s, and was for a time the highest paid performer (Actor?) in films. The first episode of this canine crime fighter series commenced when the U.S. Cavalry came upon a wagon train that had been attacked by Apache Indians. The only survivors were a young boy named Rusty and his German shepherd he called Rin Tin Tin. The Cavalry took the boy and his dog to Fort Apache in Arizona, where Lt. Amos 'n' Andy

    Amos 'n' Andy

    CBS (ended 1953)
Alvin Childress and Tim Moore starred in what is considered by some to be the most offensive television program of all time. Despite its controversy, it was also one of first TV shows to have a predominantly black cast.
"Amos 'n' Andy" began as a weekly series airing Thursday nights on CBS. Twenty-seven new episodes were broadcast through January 3, 1952. This was followed by 25 weeks of reruns. When new episodes returned on July 10, 1952, "Amos 'n' Andy" became a bi-weekly series. By June 11, 1953, the date of the final CBS broadcast, only 52 "Amos 'n' Andy" episodes had been aired. An additional 13 episodes premiered in Fall 1953 when the series became nationally syndicated. (In most cities, the syndicated run began with these 13 new episodes, followed by reruns of the 52 CBS shows.) In August 1954, filming began on "The Adventures of Kingfish," an "Amos 'n' Andy" spinoff slated to premiere January 4, 1955 on CBS. But according to an article in the January 1, 1955 issue of Billboard magazine, "Kingfish" was taken off the schedule before it could even make its debut. Later that month, the 13 "Kingfish" episodes premiered in first-run syndication as part of the "Amos 'n' Andy" series. With these final 13, there were now a total of 78 "Amos 'n' Andy" episodes.moreless

    Our Miss Brooks

    Our Miss Brooks

    CBS (ended 1956)
The trials and tribulations of Connie Brooks, the wisecracking English teacher at Madison High School. Stories depict her romantic misadventures as she struggles to impress Philip Boynton, the biology instructor; and her continual clash with stuffy, blustery Osgood P. Conklin, the principal. Connie rented a room from kindly old Mrs. Davis and rode to school each morning with one of her students, the dimwitted Walter Denton. At the start of the 1955-1956 season, Madison High was razed for a highway project and Miss Brooks found a new job at Mrs. Nestor's Private Elementary School nearby. For some reason, Mr. Conklin had acquired the job as principal there, and he and other cast members remained on the show to harass her. Connie's new love interest was the young physical education teacher, Gene Talbot, who was chasing her, quite a turnaround from Mr. Boynton's shy indifference.moreless

    Mr. Lucky

    Mr. Lucky

    CBS (ended 1960)
In this lesser-known companion series to Peter Gunn, Mr. Lucky is a suave but honest professional gambler who figures out how to operate a casino without breaking the law, by having it on a yacht moored in international waters outside the three-mile limit. The series was created by famed writer/director Blake Edwards, loosely based on the 1943 film starring Cary Grant, which was based on an original story "Bundles for Freedom" by Milton Holmes. Much of the show's atmosphere is provided by Henry Mancini's theme and incidental music, which produced two full albums, The Music From Mr. Lucky and Mr. Lucky Goes Latin. Of particular note, besides the theme, is "March of the Cue Balls" from episode 5. Mr. Lucky's pocket watch, when opened, plays the first five notes of the theme, corresponding to the words "They call him Luck-y". Edwards helped revive the concept in 1980 as a TV-movie pilot called Casino, starring Mike Connors.moreless

    Private Secretary

    Private Secretary

    CBS (ended 1957)
In this popular 1950s sitcom, Ann Sothern starred as Susie McNamera, a secretary to Peter Sands at his New York talent agency. Susie was always meddling in the personal life of her boss and of her friends at work, especially in matters of love. One of her favorite pastimes was playing matchmaker. A recurring character on the series, and Mr. Sands' chief competitor, was loudmouthed agent Cagey Calhoun. In an unusual move, Private Secretary, a CBS-TV series, also had two brief runs on another network. During the summers of 1953 and 1954, the reruns from the season just ended were shown on NBC, with the series resuming new shows on CBS each fall. Starting in the fall of 1954, this show alternated weeks with The Jack Benny Program through early 1957. In syndication, Private Secretary was retitled Susie.moreless

    Rocky and His Friends

    Rocky and His Friends

    ABC (ended 1961)
"Hello, knowledge thirsters." You may already know the program known to generations of cartoon lovers as "Rocky and Bullwinkle" was never actually called that onscreen, when originally presented. For the first two seasons, shown in the late afternoons, in black and white on the then-lowly ABC network, the show was actually called Rocky and His Friends. It then moved to the more prestigious NBC, whereupon it was shown in color, in primetime, and renamed "The Bullwinkle Show," the name always shown onscreen for syndication (more recently, for DVD, the onscreen titles have all been changed to "Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends," the new catch-all title). You will find two other program entries for Rocky and Bullwinkle in TV.com; one for The Bullwinkle Show, the other is titled The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. Neither appears to have an editor right now, and have, in my view, a lot of errors that ought to be fixed, especially The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show one (which also has the least accurate name). Here you will only find out about the two seasons that originally ran on ABC (but were later shown in color, in reruns on NBC and ABC, and in syndication).moreless

    Pixie & Dixie

    Pixie & Dixie

    (ended 1961)
In discussing Hanna Barbera Productions and animations, Pixie & Dixie is a memorable show to begin with. There was television animation before the Hanna-Barbera studio got into the act, prime examples being Crusader Rabbit and Winky Dink. But it was Hanna-Barbera that turned TV animation into an industry. Their first half-hour show — the first half-hour animated show to succeed in the TV market — was Huckleberry Hound, which debuted in syndication on October 2, 1958. The series featured two mices Pixe and Dixie, who are the bestest friends untill the end. The two try to live there life from not being hurt, harm or destroyed from a cat named Mr. Jinks, who hates "mecess to pieces". The series is more related and conflicted to Tom & Jerry. But very different, it's real funny and usually warm touching.moreless

The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp

The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp

    ABC (ended 1961)
The first of its kind...the original adult western. The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp was the first in a wave of new TV westerns aimed at adults (previous entries, such as The Cisco Kid and The Lone Ranger, were considered fodder for the after-school crowd). The show was then followed, in the same season, by Gunsmoke on CBS, Frontier on NBC and Wyatt's fellow ABC show Cheyenne. It was these four shows alone that started an incredible and unmatched phenomena that would see up to 28 new westerns premiering during the 1958 primetime TV season. But only a handful of them were able to dominate a few of the top 10 spots in the network ratings and Wyatt Earp was one of them. Wyatt Earp was inspired by the legendary events of the real life Frontier Marshal who lived from 1848 to 1929. The show followed Earp from his days as a Marshal in Ellsworth and then later Dodge City (this caused some confusion amongst viewers since Matt Dillion was the Marshal of Dodge City in Gunsmoke) and finally to the infamous Tombstone, Arizona. Along the way Wyatt would encounter such figures as John Wesley Hardin, the Thompson Brothers, Doc Holliday and Earp's brothers Virgil and Morgan. Bat Masterson would also appear before getting his own series (where he would be played a different actor). The show even featured the famous Buntline Special, a foot-long-barreled Colt .45 single-action revolver which many believe to be the kind of gun that the real Wyatt carried and was given to by Ned Buntline. The series would conclude in 1961, after six full seasons, with an epic five episode story that told of how Wyatt took on Old Man Clanton and the Ten Percent Gang in a final showdown at the O.K. Coral with the help of his brothers and Doc Holliday. The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp is not as well known today as most other classic westerns such as Gunsmoke and Bonanza simply because it didn't last as long and was not shot in color. But ask any baby boomer who grew up in front of the television during the '50s and they'll easily recall Wyatt Earp with fond memories. By today's standards, the series was rare in that Frederick Hazlitt Brennan, an author and playwright, didn't just write the first episode (based on the 1931 biography by Stuart N. Lake), he wrote the majority of the 226 episodes throughout the series' entire six season run. This Desilu production originally aired from 1955 to 1961 on ABC, Tuesdays at 8:30pm. Witness for yourself how well this superb series, starring Hugh O'Brian, still holds up by watching newly restored episodes on TV Land every weekend at 3pm. Loretta Young Show

    Loretta Young Show

    NBC (ended 1961)
The Loretta Young Show's trademark was the dramatic entrance Miss Young made at the beginning of each episode. She would come sweeping through a doorway with her full-skirted dress swirling around her and move into the center of the room to introduce the evening's play. Equally distinctive was the program's close, when she would return and read a few lines of poetry or a passage from the Bible that amplified or restated the message of the play just telecast. Miss Young starred in over half the plays aired during the series' eight-season run, playing everything from nuns to housewives. The periods and locations varied, the story may have been serious, amusing, or touching, but all were uplifting. When this series premiered it was titled Letter to Loretta. All of the stories were done as responses to letters that she had received. She would read a letter at the beginning of each show and then star in the dramatized answer. Although the title was changed to The Loretta Young Show on February 7, 1954, this format was retained through the first two seasons. At the start of the 1955-1956 season the series became a straight dramatic show and the letter concept was dropped. Miss Young also cut back her starring appearances to roughly half of each year's episodes.moreless

    Davy Crockett

    ABC (ended 1955)
The classic Walt Disney series featuring the life of Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier, starring Fess Parker (Daniel Boone) and Buddy Ebsen (Beverly Hillbillies, Barnaby Jones) as the legendary frontiersman Davy Crockett and his best friend, Georgie Russell.

The series followed their adventures through the Indian Wars, Davy's tenure in Congress, travels down the Missisippi River, and the last stand at the Alamo.

The five episodes of the series aired as segments of "Disneyland"; in 1954 and 1955. Later, they were re-edited and packaged into the theatrical releases Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier and Davy Crockett and the River Pirates. In 1989, Disney launched a revival series, with Tim Dunigan and Gary Grubbs. Though good in its own right, it never reached the popularity of the original Fess Parker episodes.

The popularity of the shows made the "Ballad of Davy Crockett" a chart-topping single and inspired children across the country to sport coonskin caps.moreless
