Episode Summary

EDIT
A convicted arsonist, son of a notorious criminal, is freed after it is discovered that he committed another crime when a fire was started in a school which burnt the caretaker.

UCOS is asked to re-investigate and discover who really did it.
Halford is determined to nail a vicious criminal who has so far eluded him and in doing so he puts himself in grave danger.

But the team get distracted by other things and take their eye off the case, leading Pullman to become increasingly frustrated and weigh up an opportunity that could end her time in UCOS.moreless

  • This is one of my favourite episodes. All in all it is highly entertaining, maintains a good pace, and has a whodunnit suspense with a variety of suspects and several surprises including the real reason the school fire was set.moreless

This episode is a favourite with a number of subplots expertly woven together with the main one, the fire at the school. It was nice to see Kevin Whately, as the school´s Vice Principal, in a role quite different from that of Sergeant Lewis in the Inspector Morse series. The convention scenes taught me a few things about the world of toy (sorry, I mean miniature) soldiers. I enjoyed seeing Brian get into the war games himself and rescued from having too much post-game merriment by his UCOS team mates. I was not very interested in the poor father-son relationship in the Hanson family until the real reason was revealed. I thought Joe Absolom played the son's role a bit flat but David Troughton played the baddie father well. The subplot about Emily who showed up claiming to be Gerry's daughter was well done. It allowed Gerry some character development beginning with hesitance when he first met her to acceptance by the end when he presented her to his family. The episode was highly entertaining, with a good pace, and a whodunnit suspense using a variety of suspects and several surprises including the real reason for the school fire.moreless
