Though many casual observers perceive that comic actor Tom Poston was "discovered" by Steve Allen in 1956, Poston had in fact been a performer long before Allen ever set foot on a stage. At age 9, Poston was a member of the Flying Zebleys, an acrobatic troupe. After Air Force service in World War II, he began his formal acting training at the AADA. Poston made his "legit" New York stage debut in Jose Ferrer's Cyrano de Bergerac (1947). With several years of stage work under his belt, Poston was engaged to host the local New York TV variety series Entertainment (1955), and it was this effort that brought him to the attention of Steve Allen. The story goes that Poston was so flustered at his audition for Allen's TV variety series that he forgot his own name when asked. From 1956 through 1960, Poston was seen along with Louis Nye and Don Knotts as a member of the Allen stock company; appropriately, he was most often cast as a "man on the street" interviewee who could never remember his name. Poston won an Emmy for his work on Allen's show in 1959, and that same year hosted the weekday TV game show Split Personality; this gig led to a long tenure as a guest panelist on other quiz programs. In films from 1953, Poston starred in a pair of offbeat William Castle-directed comedies, Zotz (1962) and The Old Dark House (1963). Poston's TV sitcom credits include such roles as prison guard Sullivan on On the Rocks (1975), absent minded Damon Jerome on We've Got Each Other (1977), cantankerous neighbor Franklin Delano Bickley on Mork and Mindy and Ringo Crowley on Good Grief (1990). In 1982, Poston beat out Jerry Van Dyke for his most famous prime-time TV role: caretaker George Utley on Newhart.moreless

Bob Newhart is a one of the well known comedian that is still around today. Born in Oak Park, Illinois, after dropping out of law school, Newhart decided to settle his life as an accountant, but has a hobby of doing comedy routines in the radio. Warner Brothers was so impressed with his talent, that they signed him to record his first ever album in 1960, called The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart. It was a major hit. Newhart was soon offered many comedy roles, and in 1961, he signed on with NBC for The Bob Newhart Show. Although the show won an Emmy it was canceled due to poor ratings. Newhart then went on to preform at nightclubs, guest stars in TV shows and movies. He was a frequent guest in The Tonight Show and The Ed Sullivan Show. Newhart returned to the starting role in a new, The Bob Newhart Show, playing psychologist Dr. Bob Hartley. Unlike last time, this was an instinct success of the 70's. After 6 seasons and many awards, Newhart thinks it's time for the show to end, thinking it used up all the orignal tricks it could have. Four years later, Newhart stars in another series called Newhart, playing Dick Loudon, a guy who decides to open an inn in Vermont. In 1992, he again star in another series, Bob, but it was never a big hit due to a poor time slot. However, Newhart already established himself as a great comedian legend of all time.moreless

Julia is best known to television audiences as Stephanie, the self-infatuated preppy maid, whom she played for seven seasons on the hit comedy series "Newhart." • William Sanderson

    Larry

    9.2
William Sanderson was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, in the shadow of Elvis Presley. It was not unusual for Bill to see his hero in the streets of Memphis. He took to following Presley, and even managed to sneak into Graceland where he was able to listen to Elvis play a piano ballad.

William enlisted in the Army, serving two years. After his discharge he enrolled in Southern Methodist University. He later earned a BBA degree and a JD law degree from Memphis State. His interest in acting kept him from taking the bar exam.

Sanderson moved to New York and studied with acting teachers Herbert Berghof and William Hickey, whom he would call his greatest influences. He soon began landing roles in off-Broadway productions and independent films.

Sanderson's distinctive hound dog face lends itself to character acting, and he moved to Hollywood to take on small roles in films like "The Onion Field" and "Coal Miner's Daughter."

William made a name for himself playing a toymaker/genetic designer in the science fiction film, "Blade Runner." Following this, Sanderson took on a completely different type of roll, playing quirky backwoodsman "Larry" in the popular sitcom Newhart.

Sanderson has continued to make films, such as "Fletch," "City Heat," and "Gods and Generals." He took a star turn in the comedy "Stanley's Gig," opposite Faye Dunaway.

William has also kept busy with roles in television, including a recurring role on Maximum Bob with Beau Bridges, and guest shots on The Young Riders, Matlock, The X Files, The Practice, ER, and the mini-series Lonesome Dove among many other projects. He also has done cartoon voice over work on Batman: The Animated Series and Santo Bugito.

Sanderson's most recent role is of hotelier E.B. Pharnum on the HBO drama, Deadwood, for which he has won critical praise.

When Ruth Gordon, at the age of 72, won an Oscar for her delightfully sinister supporting performance in Rosemary's Baby (1968), she declared, "I can't tell you how encouraging a thing like this is." It nicely summed up the energy and optimism she displayed over a 70-year career, which began with a 1915 stage debut as Peter Pan and went on to include many now-classic dramatic and comedic stage roles in the likes of "The Country Wife" and "The Matchmaker." Though she had appeared onscreen in Camille (1915) and The Whirl of Life (1916), Gordon's film career began in earnest with roles in Abe Lincoln in Illinois (as Mary Todd), Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bul let (both 1940), and Two-Faced Woman (1941). She married playwright Garson Kanin in 1942; together they wrote a series of acclaimed screenplays that George Cukor directed: A Double Life (1947) and the Spencer Tracy-Katharine Hepburn classics Adam's Rib (1949) and Pat and Mike (1952), all three Oscarnominated, as well as The Marrying Kind (1952). Gordon also wrote The Actress (1953), an adaptation of her own autobiographical play "Years Ago," which starred Jean Simmons in the title role. In the mid 1960s, Gordon took up screen acting once again and got her second wind in no time, picking up an Oscar nomination for her turn in Inside Daisy Clover (1965), and then becoming a sensation in Rosemary's Baby. She followed her Oscarwinning performance with hilarious work in Where's Poppa? (1970), and achieved bona fide "cult" status as Bud Cort's lover in the black comedy Harold and Maude (1971). Gordon worked constantly until her death, appearing in Every Which Way But Loose (1978), Boardwalk (1979), My Bodyguard (1980), and Maxie (1985). She also worked extensively on TV, including an Emmy-winning turn on an episode of "Taxi." She wrote two volumes of autiobiography, "Myself Among Others" (1971) and "My Side" (1976).moreless

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Robert Picardo graduated from the William Penn Charter School. He entered Yale University as a pre-med student, not knowing that he would someday portray doctors in three separate productions: first as Dr. Dick Richard on the ABC series China Beach, then as Dr. McCaskill in the theater production In The Waiting Room at the Mark Taper Forum, and then as The Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager.
After graduating from Yale University Robert wanted to be an actor, but his parents weren't supportive. This changed when he sang in Leonard Bernstein's Mass, and Bernstein himself saw Picardo and told him he should pursue being an actor. The young Picardo asked Bernstein to tell that to his parents, which the great composer did, thereby changing their minds. In 1997 he made his Broadway debut in the comedy Gemini with Danny Aiello.

In the early 1980's he became involved in television, where he soon was nominated for an Emmy award for his role as Mr. Cutlip on the acclaimed series The Wonder Years. Following The Wonder Years he has had much success on television, he starred as Dr. Richard on China Beach and then played The Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager for six seasons. He finished up starring in Stargate Atlantis in 2009 as Richard Woolsey.
