  • Simply the greatest series finale.

I won't give away the ending either, but this was, without a doubt, the greatest series final ever. When the series finale aired, I lived in Vermont, where the show took place. I had no idea as to how they were going to end it, but I was so thankful for the ending the writers gave it. It could not have ended better.

    • Much in the fashion of the final Mary Tyler Moore Show, the final episode of Newhart had a closing credit sequence, in which the entire cast does a curtain call with Bob thanking the audience to a thunderous applause.

Unlike, MTM's finale, whose curtain call closing was replaced in syndication by a generic closing, but was recently restored on the DVD set(of MTM), the final Newhart has retained its curtain call closing in syndication to this very day.

    • When this episode originally aired on CBS, the last scene closed with the theme from The Bob Newhart Show. In syndication this was replaced by generic music.

    • Series star Tom Poston and guest star Suzanne Pleshette would eventually get married on May 11, 2001.

    • Bob Newhart's real-life wife came up with the idea for the ending.

    • In this final episode at the end when The MTM logo forms, the MTM cat lip syncs Darryl and Darryl yelling "QUIET!!!" the first and two only Darryls' words in this show.

    • TV Land's 100 Most Unexpected TV Moments list gave this episode's ending the #1 slot.

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • During the episode Michael references two Beatles songs - "Hello, Goodbye" as he and Steph say goodbye to Dick and Joanna; and "We Can Work it Out" as the townspeople divide up the rooms of the Stratford between themselves.
