Next of Kin

Show Summary

Maggie and Andrew Prentice have taken early retirement and are looking forward to spending their last decades sipping good wine and enjoying the fine cuisine and clement climate at their new home in France. But their plans are shelved by the death in a car crash of their estranged son Graham and his humourless wife. As the next of kin, the Prentices become the legal guardians of their three grandchildren, Georgia (13), Philip (11) and Jake (5), and their menagerie of pets. It's a rum do, especially for Maggie who readily admits that she loathes children and was never cut out for motherhood. To make matters worse, the sprogs are essentially miniature versions of their parents, indoctrinated as haters of humankind, virulent anti-smokers and champions of various modern-day concerns: whales, trees, the environment, sexual politics, and so on. (The original cast was rounded off by the Prentices' house-cleaner, Liz, who has a crush on Tom, a Lothario builder employed by the family.) After the 1995 Christmas special the Prentices officially adopt their young charges.moreless

  • In an effort to be bitterly evil, everything just comes out sarcastically funny.

I remember watching this on Saturday nights and I would find myself singing along with the opening theme song... "tea for two and two for tea, me for you and you for me." I love how the kids seemed environmentally conscious, but they were the snottiest and I was quite afraid of that. There is just something about kids wanting to protect the earth while destroying others around them that just gets to me. Quite creepy, but the elderly couple just takes everything as it comes and there are snide remarks made and everything starts to look a little better at the end... somehow they manage to avoid the apocalypse...how strange, but it will always be a classic.moreless
