  • Can Captain Lindemann save the mermaid he has caught in his fishing nets?

Clearly inspired by Rene Magritte's surrealist painting, this episode tells a rather poetic story with a straight face; its later stages are, however, not without a comic side. Made up to resemble Gregory Peck as Captain Ahab, Stuart Whitman plays the penurious, hard-hearted sea captain whose fishing-boat lands an unexpected catch. The beautiful girl with a fish's tail instead of legs pines for the sea, and her yearning arouses a long-dormant protective instinct in the captain. But he errs by putting his faith in the "magic potion" of a small-time fortune-teller and his mermaid returns to the sea which sustains her only after a grotesque transformation. A curious tale, with sets designed by Joseph R. Alves, who did similar work a few years later on "Jaws".
