The "Night Gallery" episodes which aimed at being ghoulishly comic were often poor, and their chief virtue was simply that they didn't usually take up much time. This dramatisation of a (rather more stylish) Joan Aiken story suffers, however, from the unusual defect of being too short. We really need to know a little bit more about the Robert Morse character, and to see a few more of his obnoxious characteristics (and to understand him a little more clearly) for the surprise twist to have sufficient bite. The plot slightly resembles the last section of Evelyn Waugh's "A Handful Of Dust"; perhaps Stephen King (a regular "Night Gallery" viewer) remembered it before writing "Misery"?
