  • Don't mess with the Cthulhu Mythos!

A very simple joke, and fortunately not over-extended. Most of the allegedly comic blackout sketches used to fill up "Night Gallery" segments were terrible, but this one, in which a supercilious academic pours scorn on Lovecraftian notions of the dark gods of Cthulhu only to stimulate them to highly characteristic vengeance, is rather funny. One notes that Professor Peabody's students all bear the surnames of famous horror writers, but the emphasis isn't on them but on the Prof's increasingly nervous sarcasm as thunderclouds roll in the sky outside his lecture-hall. Carl Reiner gives a tour-de-force performance. If the sketch were to be remade today, could Professor Richard Dawkins be persuaded to take over the part?
