This vignette serves as an amusing twist on Edgar Allan Poe's sinister tale of deceit and betrayal, The Cask of Amontillado. In my opinion, The Merciful is the second best of the Night Gallery vignettes. Preceded only by An Act of Chivalry. Not more than two and a half minutes long, The Merciful is clever and amusing. Black comedy at it's best, I would say.
It starts out as an old woman is laying bricks in the cellar, and it appears she is creating a blockade for her uneasy looking husband who is sitting nervously in a chair facing towards the old womans crafting. Just as she is finished the doorbell rings and the old man gets up and leaves the cellar to answer the door. Revealing that the old woman actually entombed herself in the cellar.
