      • (opening commentary)
Tom: Jazz: to some people it's more than music, it's a religion. The high priests are living legends, like Archie Marshall, a man who's seen his share of trouble, a tired man carrying a tarnished saxophone from bar to lounge to bar, a genius who will settle for bad board and a place to play his music with dignity. It's not a lot to ask. But jazz and tragedy seem to keep close company.

      • Archie: They tell me to get some synthesizer whiz kids, update the sound. The music is all I got Colb. If I can't play it the way I feel it, I'm dead meat.
Colby: Well, tell them to kiss off. You're the boss of the outfit.
        Archie: That's the rumor.

      • Archie: I told Colby here when he was a kid three things. One, always learn the rules before you break them; two, play what you feel, not what they tell you; three, stay away from women and whiskey.
Tom: Should have listened to the man Colb.
Nicole: Well, my mother always told me that behind every great man is a greater woman.

      • (closing commentary)
Tom: Jazz has given birth to a thousand legends, like how true love sometimes turns hard and bitter, like how the road takes its toll and the music demands sacrifice. Francine Marshall never really understood the legends; she thought that popularity was success. But for Archie, creating the music is its own reward. For him all the legends are true.
