A group of animal-rights activists calling themselves the Friends of the Silent Ones break into a research laboratory letting loose animals used in research and stealing some monkeys. They photograph the monkeys and send the photo along with a letter to the Eagle. One of the activists is shot in the escape and when he turns up in a hospital to be treated for the bullet wound, develops a life-threatening infection which the medical staff cannot identify. A PhD student working as lab researcher and assisting Frank in the investigation identifies the monkey cages as those used to store contaminated animals forcing Kevin and Frank to race to recover the virus and stop a potential epidemic.moreless

    • TRIVIA (1)

      • In this episode we learn from Tom that he has a sister who was allergic to dogs when he was growing up and also that the family lived in an apartment which forbade pets.

    • QUOTES (4)

      • (opening commentary)
Tom: I never had a dog when I was a kid. So when I was young it seemed the world was divided into two kinds of people: those who had dogs and those who had allergic sisters. I suppose if I had a dog or a cat or even a gerbil back in my formative years, I might now be able to fathom why they bring out the very best in people; and the very worst.

      • Dr. Eisley: I never meant for anyone to get hurt.
Frank: Nobody buys weapons and doesn't use them. Didn't anybody ever tell you that lady?

      • Janet Crossleigh: Well, thanks for the detective lessons.
        Frank: Oh, any time.
Janet Crossleigh: If you ever need any help with a case, give me a call.
        Frank: I will.
Janet Crossleigh: Even if you don't need any help with a case, give me a call.

      • (closing commentary)
Tom: There will be those who insist on calling them heroes, but that's to miss an essential truth: their act was unwitting. The fact that they almost paid for it with their lives does not make it in any way nobler. If there are to be heroes in this story, they're accidental. Maybe in this age where someone can create a medical miracle one minute and a monstrosity the next, all we can expect are accidental heroes.
