So says Phil Keoghan (The Amazing Race) to participants selected to appear on his new Discovery Channel show, No Opportunity Wasted. A new "reality series," this program was created by Phil based on his own near-death experience he had when exploring a shipwreck for a New Zealand TV adventure show. After surviving and then completing the dive, he created a personal list of things that he wanted to do before he died. In this show, he encourages participants and viewers to make their dreams into reality, each in their own way.
The premiere episode of No Opportunity Wasted has a nautical theme and features two participants hoping to turn their ambitions into reality. One is Shane Platt, who is terrified of sharks and the other is Jamyz Dilworth, who hopes to create a boat and then sail it through the Farallon Islands, a treacherous area near the Golden Gate Bridge containing great white sharks and known to Native Americans as the "Islands of the Dead." To help them out, both are provided with a clear schedule for 72 hours, $3,000 on a provided MasterCard, and the N.O.W. flag for inspiration. Everything else is up to them and it's obvious that the show rewards those who have done their homework, because both have definite plans as to what to do.
Phil and the show follow them throughout, documenting both the greatest successes and challenges that must be overcome, lest the participants fail to make good of their opportunity. For Shane Platt, it's very personal --- he's working in a job he hates and deep-sea-diving is one of his only passions. If he can't overcome his fear of sharks, it's failure to him and he does not like to fail. As for Jamyz, he's determined to build his boat with the help of his friends, but inclement weather threatens to derail the entire plan. With such obstacles, failure seems like a very real possibility, but to find out what happens, you'll have to tune in to the premiere episode: "Shark Fear / Build a Boat."
Although the first episode profiles two stories, descriptions for some others indicate that only one will be featured. It'll be interesting to see if there's a different feel to the show when entire hour is spent focusing on jut one participant. One of the best parts of the show is when Phil appears to those selected on the spot and tells them they're going to be on the show. One first asks "are you with law enforcement agencies" and then curses once he finds out he's been selected. Although all possible participants must apply and audition first, those who are actually selected have no idea they're going on the show until Phil literally meets them right at home, at work, or even stepping off of a bus.
Though billed as reality show, No Opportunity Wasted seems to have the general look and feel of a documentary or the general type of program you would see on the Discovery Channel. Phil narrates throughout and helpful on-screen captions provide names as well as useful bits of information. This certainly isn't a bad thing. If No Opportunity Wasted is reality TV, it's certainly reality TV of a higher standard, much like The Amazing Race.
