  • Perhaps the very best episode of Norm (AKA "The Norm Show")....

    10
I love The Norm Show - but as much as it is entertaining and fun as all get out, it is not exactly an example of expert writing or brilliant television production. As low brow, wacky, and screwy as it often is, The Norm Show is very clever, extremely fun, and a well done situation comedy but it is episodes like this one, "Norm And Shelly Break-Up," that makes The Norm Show very underrated and puts it in a higher category than most sitcoms.

Here in "Norm And Shelly Break-Up" the not-so-ready-to-commit Norm begins to see signs of Shelly perhaps moving their relationship too fast and getting ready to settle down; and this foreseeable danger is further amplified when Norm accidentally tells Shelly that he loves her. Now Norm is doing everything he can to try to slow things down - and anyone half-way familiar with Norm MacDonald or The Norm Show will know that Norm ain't subtle.

"Norm And Shelly Break-Up" has the many off-the-wall and almost random jokes that The Norm Show is known for delivering (in Norm's dry and cheeky fashion) - the best that the show has to offer, including the highlight of the Laurie running for city council story arc - but it delivers something extra as well: an excellent story. Now Norm and Shelly's romance is more than a funny situation for us audience members to have fun watching Norm dig his way out of or a ploy by the studio to get higher ratings, the characters of both Norm and Shelly get flushed out here in this episode. Every scene is packed with hilarity but the story gets real for Norm - and that makes "Norm And Shelly Break-Up" an extra-special episode. Plus, as much as Norm MacDonald has ragged on his acting talent, "Norm And Shelly Break-Up" features what might be Norm's finest moments of acting and reveals what a shame it really is that he never pursued the *acting* half of his career harder than he did.moreless
