Time period: May 1864 - late autumn 1864. George is captured by Southern forces, taken to prison and tortured. Orry is shot and taken to the hospital where Virgilia works, who despite her hatred towards southerners, help him recover and allows him to escape. Bent begins planning to assassinate Confederate President Davis. Bent tries to kill Madeline. Charles and Augusta become lovers.moreless

      • Goof: Snipers attack the yankee camp and no one even ducks as some men are recruited to get them.

      • Charles insists that Augusta has some whiskey to put herself together and she says that she is not used to it. However, she drinks it up without even making a face.

      • Virgilia does never get blood stains other than in her white apron. Her grey nurse outfit remains untouched.

      • When George and the other Yankee prisoners arrive to Libby prison, Cptn. Turner says to have revised them thoroughly. He even check's inside one man's mouth. However, the prisoners' boots aren't revised and they are allowed to keep them all the time.

      • Madeline names his baby boy Orry Nicholas like his father.

      • Goof: The blood stains in Virgilia's nurse outfit are the exact same ones between scenes that are far away in time.

      • Charles is mad with Augusta because she shows up in the battle field at a risky time when Yankees can be back any second. However, immediately after he states so, he finds appropiate to make out with her and fall asleep together.

      • James Read did some research of his own family background while filming North and South, and he learned that some of his relatives died fighting in the Civil War and that some others were imprisoned. Knowing these facts affected his performance when George was taken to Libby prison.
