Joel undergoes an interesting metamorphosis in this episode. After expressing moral indignation to Maggie over her hunting and killing a deer, he tries out hunting for himself on a trip with Chris and Holling. Despite himself, he becomes intoxicated with his primal urge to hunt, even surprising his hunt mates. After winging a bird, however, his even more powerful instinct to preserve life wins out, and he brings the wounded bird to his office to frantically try to save its life.

Meanwhile, I really connected with Ed's sadness about Ruth-Anne's age. Searching for the perfect birthday gift for her, he asks advice from Chris. Chris delivers this comedic gem:

"Oh, yeah, the great question: What do women want? ... Same things we do, only in prettier colors.

The scene where Ed and Ruth-Anne dance on her future grave site is one of the most memorable moments in television.

A very fine episode, with warm human caring displayed by both Joel and Ed.moreless
