  • The writers of this show prove that they can move us as well.

    8.0
The first season really runs the gamut as far as our emotions are concerned. From hysterical moments of levity to bittersweet romance, they really seem to want to pack it all in. They succeed in this episode where others do not in almost bringing a tear to the eye.

The main plot thread concerns Maurice lamenting the death of his brother. Without his brother, there will be no heir to the Minnifield name, so Maurice decides to adopt Chris as his son. Chris takes to it at first, graciously accepting a free car and meals and tolerating Maurice's sentimental musings on the importance of family. Eventually, though, Chris can't take it anymore. But think about it, would you want to be Minnifield's heir?

Maurice is probably more lonely than the show lets on in episodes prior, and Barry Corbin has the acting chops to pull this off. Chris's acceptance of Maurice's Cadillac means so much to him that it brings tears to his eyes. And usually rock-hard Maurice actually displaying that much emotion almost brings tears to mine.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • When Ed approaches Holling and Shelly's tent, he knocks. It has been established in all episodes so far that Ed never knocks, just enters, as Indians think knocking is rude.

    • When Maurice passes the biscuits to Chris as they're having dinner, a fishing line is clearly visible pulling the plate down the long table.

  • QUOTES (5)

    • Chris: And now for the traffic report. (Looks out window, sees truck speeding by) Maggie O'Connell just drove down main street--too fast.

    • Maggie: I may not have had a child, Fleischman. But I know one when I see one.

    • Joel: There are four words you need to know to adequately prepare yourself for child birth - take notes here, ladies - I … want … my … epidural.

    • Joel: Listen folks, I hate to cut this short, but we have to fly. So before we go, are there any questions, something you'd like to ask a doctor?
Woman: How will I know when it's time [to give birth]?
Joel: Trust me, all women show up.

    • Shelly: Whether you shoot Jessie or he mauls you, I want to be there by your side.

  • NOTES (4)

    • Music:- "Rhinestone Cowboy" by Glen Campbell
      - "Daddy's Home" by Shep & The Limelights
      - "Stardust" by Benny Goodman

    • The television show that Maurice and Chris watch is "A Year in the Life," a TV series from 1986-87 that was produced by "Northern Exposure" creators Joshua Brand and John Falsey. The two actors in the clip are Richard Kiley and Trey Ames.

    • Another extra scene on the DVD has dialogue explaining that Maurice's brother suffered a heart attack while flying his Cessna near the Detroit International Airport and had managed to land the plane safely before he died.

    • On the Season 1 DVD there is an extra scene at Maurice's cabin with Chris. Chris reads a poem from Whitman's Leaves of Grass while Maurice fires a shotgun several times (the shells possibly containing his brother's ashes) and begins to weep.

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • Kodak Moment: The title is a pun on a famous phrase, used by Kodak cameras, "a Kodak moment." The title is a play on words with the term for a type of bear, and a reference to cameras, which figures in the Holling subplot.
